As part of this years National Consumer Week (4 10 November) Highlands and Islands (Scottish Labour) MSP, David Stewart, is urging people in across the region to Check it, dont regret it! when purchasing a used car.

The campaign is being run by Citizens Advice Scotland which has found that used cars are the single biggest issue being reported to its consumer service in Scotland, which is dealing with over 4,700 used car problems a year.

The charity has launched a month-long campaign to raise awareness about buying a used car, including a handy Top Ten checklist to make when buying a used car. Mr Stewart has backed the campaign aimed at helping those across the region.

A car is often one of the most expensive purchases a person makes in their lifetime. Many individuals and families in the Highlands and Islands, especially those in rural parts outside of Inverness depend on cars to get to work, to do the school run, to do their shopping, or visit friends and family members.

Given the importance of cars to so many people, finding one that is safe, legal, and that fits the bill is absolutely essential. So its a real concern that used cars are the single biggest issue being reported to the Citizens Advice consumer service in Scotland.

I welcome the Citizens Advice Scotland consumer campaign to promote awareness of the issue. People need to be more aware of the potential pitfalls of buying a used car. If they follow the top ten checklist when buying a used car, it should help them avoid regretting their purchase later.
