50 MPH North of Kessock Bridge

28th January 2016

Highlands & Islands MSP and Scottish (Labour) Spokesperson for Transport, David Stewart, has highlighted that through his Kessock Bridge Lights campaign, it has become apparent that so many are asking why the 50mph speed restriction is applied for such a long distance North of the bridge.

"This is a very good question said David Stewart, When Transport Scotland sought approval for the speed restriction on the bridge to be reduced from 70mph to 50mph is was to quote ‘ to improve the operational safety of the bridge, which I can live with. However, if the bridge is 1.05 km long and the restriction extends for 1.82km, then why does it need to extend for nearly 0.77 km or half a mile North of the Kessock Bridge? he asked.

David Stewart went on The speed restriction was brought in at the time resurfacing and bridge repair work was being carried out and then the decision was made to retain the speed limit of 50mph for the bridge, as I said, I can understand that, but why extend the 50mph speed limit North for half a mile to near the North Kessock access junction? Once again I will be writing to the Transport Minister on this issue seeking an explanation and the rationale behind this decision.
