Rocketing fuel Prices - How to Reduce Fuel Consumption
9th January 2008
There is a lot a motorist can do to reduce fuel consumption and save money. There are quite a few easy and inexpensive maintenance steps that can be taken to add miles to every gallon and save money.
Dirty oil, worn spark plugs, faulty thermostats, loose filler caps, under inflated tyres, malfunctioning engine controls, poor wheel alignment and clogged air filters are just some of the causes of poor fuel consumption.
Bad driving habits can also adversely affect fuel consumption, these include: exceeding speed limits, aggressive driving, excessive idling and carrying heavy items in a vehicle.
Fast driving in low gears can consume up to 45% more fuel than is needed, open windows reduce your MPG by 10% and sudden changes in speed wastes fuel.
Save Fuel with Proper Engine Use. A lot of fuel can be wasted by prolonged warming up of the engine. You do not need to warm up an engine for more than 45 seconds even on cold mornings. Starting and stopping your engine needlessly is another no-no. Avoid revving the engine, especially just before it is switched off.
