Fuel margins remain high despite lower fuel prices, CMA finds
Today's monitoring report sets out the Competition and Market Authority's (CMA) observations on developments in the UK's road fuel retail market since the previous update in March 2025.   Dan Turnbull, Senior Director of Markets at the CMA, said, "While there is uncertainty over how global events will impact the price of oil, our report shows fuel margins remain high compared to historic levels despite lower prices at the pump in recent months.

Labour's disability cuts rebellion: a former government whip asks, how did Keir Starmer not see this coming?
The government has promised to make major concessions to its universal credit and personal independence payment bill after a large-scale and very public rebellion by Labour MPs threatened to derail a vote due on July 1.   The Commons order paper published on June 26 revealed that 126 Labour MPs had signed an amendment opposing a second reading for the bill, which proposes restricting disability benefits to levels they find unacceptable.

20-year partnership to boost fusion skills in East Midlands
UKAEA and East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) announce a new 20-year collaboration to advance fusion energy training and skills development.   The collaboration will focus on developing and delivering fusion related skills, including apprenticeships and wider vocational training programmes, to support the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) project - the UK's first prototype fusion energy power plant that will be built on the West Burton site in Nottinghamshire.

UK steel producers are to benefit from stronger trade safeguards that better protect against surges in cheap imports.  These changes will adjust how much steel countries around the world can send to the UK.  This will protect British jobs while making sure the UK still has a reliable supply.   The changes will reinforce the Government's commitment as part of the Plan for Change to rebuild Britain's industrial strength and reversing decades of decline.  Steel producers across the UK will benefit from stronger trade measures from 1 July, as the government moves to better protect domestic industry from unforeseen surges in foreign imports as part of the Plan for Change.
