Tesco Announce Pay Rise To £11.02 Per Hour
22nd February 2023
Tesco announced it will give store workers a 7% pay rise, in what will be the third increase in ten months. The supermarket reached an agreement with the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (USDAW) and will increase the hourly pay rate by 72p.
This will take the hourly wage of a store worker from £10.30 to £11.02 and staff see the pay rise from April 2. Tesco said the increase in hourly pay will represent an investment of more than £230million.
As part of the pay deal, which follows discussions with the Usdaw union representing shop workers, Tesco will also increase its "additional skills payment" for shift leaders by an extra 40p to £2.26, bringing their hourly rate to £13.28.
This comes after Asda announced a 10% pay increase for its hourly-paid store workers to £11 an hour from July last week.
Lidl
From 1 October 2022, Lidl will increase entry-level rates from £10.10 to £10.90 per hour
More than just pay for supermarket staff.
In addition to pay staff in many supermarkets have other perks such as discounts on purchases from 10 to 20 percent.
This may be the deciding factor for some people such as care workers on minimum wage to choose working in stores rather than in the care sector. Imagine a family of four spending £100 per week on groceries and other items. That adds up to a saving of £500 per annum. There may be other perks such as meals or even in some cases bonus payments. That is tax free so it is worth even more.
