NDA decommissioning supply chain event returns
The NDA estate's showcase event for suppliers is returning for a fourth year and is looking forward to welcoming even more visitors and exhibitors.   More than 1,000 delegates from across the country attended the 2013 event, including existing supply chain members and decommissioning newcomers.

Week commencing 4 August 2014.   Energy & Business services: As financial closure for the Meygen tidal project approaches, RE News last week reported that parent company Atlantis Resources had agreed a contract with Andritz Hydro Hammerfest to supply three 1.5MW turbines for its initial deployment in the Inner Sound of the Pentland Firth.

Week Commencing 28 July 2014 Energy & Business services: It has been another good week for Wick Harbour.  Following the recent news that Wick Harbour Authority had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Moray Offshore Renewables Ltd, thus maintaining their position as a potential base for MORL's offshore wind operations, this week has seen Beatrice Offshore Windfarm Ltd (BOWL) announce that Wick Harbour is the preferred location for its operations and maintenance base in support of its development off the Caithness coast.

The biggest fibre cable laying project undertaken in the UK in recent years has begun on the West Coast of Scotland to deliver superfast broadband to some of the country's most remote island communities.   Thousands of homes and businesses are set to benefit from the publicly funded digital network being built to bring world class connectivity to Scotland.

Energy & Business services: Pelamis Wave Power has issued a project update on its Farr Point project off the coast of north Sutherland.  The company reports on the results consultation work and survey work in support of its likely application later this year to Marine Scotland for a 10MW array of Pelamis wave devices.

Week Commencing 14th July 2014 Energy & Business services: We welcomed a new business to the area this week, with Aberdeen-based Process Safety Solutions (PSS) opening a new base at the HIE-owned Wick Business Park.  The opening was carried out by John Swinney MSP, the Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Employment and Sustainable Growth whilst the Scottish Cabinet was in Wick this week.

Twenty-one food and drink businesses from the Highlands and Islands will attend an unprecedented ‘meet the buyer' event ahead of the Commonwealth Games.   The Showcasing Scotland event is the first large scale event of its type to be run for the Scottish food and drink industry.

Weekly update from CNSRP - week commencing 7th July 2014 Energy & Business services: News today (Friday) that Ofgem has approved the need to construct a subsea electricity cable from Caithness to Moray.  This £1.2bn project will enable the transmission of electricity from renewables projects in the north.

Week commencing 30th June 2014 Energy & Business services: As our discussions on renewables sector investment opportunities into the area continue to firm up, it is good to see evidence of further enabling work taking place in the area.  Pelamis Wave Power (PWP) has begun streaming data on wave conditions at its proposed site at Farr Point in north Sutherland.

Week commencing 23 June 2014 Tourism, Food & Drink: Following last week's food & drink success for Caithness companies, news this week that two more local businesses have been nominated for the Highlands & Islands Tourism Awards with Thurso's Mr C's Bar and Annie's Bakery both nominated in categories.   Enabling activities: CNSRP partner the Highland Council is holding two public engagement events in Caithness next week in support of the developing strategy for a new LEADER programme for the Highlands.

Four Highlands and Islands companies won a total of £173,500 last week in the fourth round of the Scottish EDGE competition.   The Scottish EDGE competition is designed to help innovative young Scottish companies to expand and grow by creating more jobs in Scotland and taking advantage of opportunities to move into international markets.

Week Commencing 16th June 2014 Tourism, Food & Drink: This week has been the annual Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh, and north companies such as Mey Selections and Berry Good have been exhibiting.  Indeed Berry Good has won the Supplier of the Year award in Scottish Farmer's awards announced at the event yesterday (Thursday), so congratulations to Jill Brown for yet more recognition for her fruit-infused spirits.

A survey has ben launched to poll around 2,000 companies across the Highlands and Islands on how technology and access to the web impacts on how they do business.   The research, which is part of a Scotland wide project, aims to measure current progress in the digital economy and the extent to which businesses are using and exploiting online opportunities.

Week commencing 9th June 2014 Energy & Business Services: I took part in a CNSRP event in Aberdeen this week with colleague Roy Kirk.  The influencers' event, run in association with the Scottish Council for Development & Industry (SCDI), attracted around 80 business representatives including many from the energy sector and featured guest speaker Robin Watson, Chief Executive of Wood Group PSN.

A Caithness based processor and supplier of locally sourced shellfish is to further expand its premises to help manage the growing worldwide demand for its products.   Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) is supporting JPL Shellfish with a grant of £60,000 which will also allow the company to increase its workforce.

HIGHLANDS and Islands Enterprise (HIE) is investing in Scotland's first women-focused network designed to encourage more female angel investors and entrepreneurs.  Investing Women is being launched in the region tomorrow (Thursday June 5).

Week Commencing 2nd June 2014 Tourism, Food & Drink: Further success for the area's food & drink sector is evident in this week's news that JPL Shellfish is to expand its premises at Scrabster to meet increasing international demand for its products.  As previously highlighted, the company has been winning business in European export markets, but more recently has seen significant interest from markets in Southeast Asia.
