Work to provide every school pupil in Scotland with a laptop or tablet has started. Education Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville has confirmed discussions with local government are underway to deliver the ambitious commitment, which will benefit 700,000 children.

King scallop fishing by UK and EU vessels is to be suspended in UK waters of ICES area VIId after consultation with the UK scallop industry and the Government's marine science service Cefas. The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) and fellow UK Fisheries Administrations (UKFAs) have closed the fishery in UK waters from 15 August until 4 October 2021 to all over-10m vessels.

Community groups and organisations from across the country are being invited to apply for funding to host events and activities that will celebrate Scotland's Year of Stories 2022. The new Community Stories Fund, which is worth £300,000, is being delivered in partnership between VisitScotland and Museums Galleries Scotland with support from National Lottery Heritage Fund, thanks to National Lottery players.

A major new project will tackle pests in potatoes through the protection of clean land and the management of land already infested with pests. The project will focus specifically on tackling potato cyst nematode (PCN), which is becoming an increasing challenge, with its presence in some fields across Scotland.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and representatives from Scotland's trades unions led by STUC General Secretary Rozanne Foyer will meet later today (Thursday 12 August 2021) to discuss key issues affecting workers as Scotland recovers from the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Matters such as the need for the UK Government to extend the furlough scheme and reverse plans for damaging cuts to Universal Credit that will see households lose out on over £1,000 per year are on the agenda, as well as discussions on how to ensure workers' needs are protected as Scotland’s economy undergoes transformation to net zero.

People who live in Dundee City, Perth and Kinross and the Western Isles are the first to access new face-to-face support when applying for Scottish benefits ahead of a full roll out later this year. The introduction of Social Security Scotland's new Local Delivery service coincided with the launch of the Child Disability Payment last week, the first Scottish disability benefit which needs to be applied for.

Following the 30 June 2021 deadline for applications to the EU Settlement Scheme, the process for completing right to work checks on EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens has now changed. Employers can no longer accept EU passports or ID cards as valid proof of right to work, with the exception of Irish citizens.
