A bursary of up to £6,750 will be offered to dental students who will have to repeat a year. The support will help mitigate the financial impact on students following the necessary decision taken by Aberdeen, Dundee and Glasgow Dental Schools to defer graduation.

Speaking at his annual address at the National Farmers Union of Scotland (NFUS) AGM, Rural Economy Secretary Fergus Ewing set out proposals for legislation on the protection of livestock, proposals for a green recovery and provided farmers and crofters with financial clarity by setting out the payment strategy for 2021. After a tumultuous year with coronavirus (COVID-19) and Brexit uncertainty, Mr Ewing laid out the key role that farmers and crofters will play in managing Scotland's environment and landscape along with being part of the climate solution.
On Tuesday 16 February 2021 from 9:30 until 17:00, motorists are being advised by The Highland Council that two streets in Wick will be temporary closed to allow KIER to safely carry out Iron work repairs. U3529 Grant Street, Wick, will be closed from its junction with the U3560 Huddart Street to its junction with C1073 Macarthur Street U3560 Huddart Street, Wick, will closed from its junction with the U3654 Smith Terrace to its junction with U3569 Kinnaird Street.

The UK is a world leader in sequencing SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Of all the coronavirus genomes that have been sequenced in the world, nearly half have been sequenced by COVID-19 Genomics UK Consortium (Cog-UK).

This week, over the period 3 to 7 February 2021, based on adults in Great Britain. Compliance with most measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) remained high, with similar proportions to last week reporting always or often handwashing after returning home (90% this week compared with 89% last week), using a face covering (95% this week compared with 94% last week) and avoiding physical contact when outside their home (93% both this week and last week).

UK gross domestic product (GDP) in Quarter 4 (Oct to Dec) 2020 is estimated to have grown by 1.0%, following revised 16.1% growth in Quarter 3. Despite two consecutive quarters of growth, the level of GDP in the UK is 7.8% below its Quarter 4 2019 level.

830 new cases of COVID-19 reported. 19,184 new tests for COVID-19 that reported results - 5.2% of these were positive.
Members at today's Education committee were updated on the ongoing rollout of 1140 hours of funded ELC provision in Highland. 194 ELC settings in Highland are now delivering 1140 hours, with a further 15 settings planned to move to 1140 hours in April 2021.

A further £17.5 million of emergency coronavirus (COVID-19) funding has been allocated to support creative freelancers and the events sector. Of that, £8.5 million will go towards the events sector - distributed through the Pivotal Event Businesses Fund and the Events Industry Support Fund 2 as well as targeted support – bringing the total additional COVID-19 support for the events sector to £31.5 million.

At today's (11 February 2021) meeting of the Council's Education Committee, Members agreed on The Highland Council's Education and Learning three-year draft action plan covering short, medium and longer term priorities. This plan is currently the focus of consultation with all of our Highland schools, and ongoing collaboration with schools will underpin its future development.

The Home Office has today (11 February 2021) announced it has hit the milestone of five million applications to the EU Settlement Scheme with four months still to go before the deadline of 30 June 2021. This includes more than 4.5 million applications from England, 252,400 from Scotland, 83,800 from Wales and 81,800 from Northern Ireland up to 31 January 2021.
