A new initiative is being piloted in the Highlands and Islands to strengthen the capacity, capability and governance of social enterprises. Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has teamed up with the Bank of Scotland to provide highly qualified and experienced individuals to serve as non-executive directors on social enterprise boards.

Police in the Highlands are urging the public to be vigilant following a number of cold callers, bogus workmen and scam incidents being reported. Officers have also been informed of a number of telephone scams where cold callers advise victims they have an outstanding debt and need to purchase iTunes vouchers to pay the debt.

Hundreds of jobs for Glasgow as Genpact expands European base. Global professional services firm Genpact plans to create more than 300 new jobs in Glasgow over the next five years, following a decision to expand its European operations in Scotland.

A mini armada of specialist ships assembled Sunday 26th March.2017 as offshore work gets under way in earnest at the Beatrice wind farm site, off SE Caithness. Flagship of the five-strong multi-million fleet is the massive 24,822 tonne 'large loads lifting vessel 'Stanislav Yudin, registered in Cyprus.

More young people in Scotland will be at risk of homelessness due to UK Government changes to housing benefit, Social Security Secretary Angela Constance has said. The changes, due to take effect from 1 April, will remove the entitlement to housing support for 18 to 21 year-olds in receipt of Universal Credit who do not have a specific exemption, such as disability or childcare.

The Chief Statistician today released a set of Official Statistics drawn from the Scottish Social Attitudes Survey 2016, covering a range of topics including attitudes to government, economy, standard of living and the NHS and political engagement. In 2016, 65% trusted the Scottish Government to work in Scotland's best interests and 40% to make fair decisions, down from 73% and 49% respectively in 2015.

Atlantis, a global leader in the tidal power sector, confirms that having entered operation in November 2016 and been awarded full Ofgem accreditation as a 5 ROC project in February 2017, the MeyGen array continues to deliver clean, sustainable and predictable electricity to the National Grid. In the first three weeks of March, average generation has been sufficient to power the equivalent of 1,250 UK homes and individually the power performance of the turbines has exceeded the contractual output guarantees, putting the project on track to achieve capacity factors significantly in excess of 40%.
Week Commencing 20th March 2017 Energy & business services: Last week Swedish company Hexicon was given consent from Scottish Government for its Dounreay Tri floating offshore wind project. As previously highlighted here, the company has announced commitments to work with Scrabster Harbour Trust to establish an Operations & Maintenance base for the project, and with North Highland College UHI to establish apprenticeship training, should it reach financial closure.

New funding to further support Scotland's "phenomenal" food and drink industry has been announced by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon. The Scottish Government, its enterprise agencies, and the food and drink industry are supporting delivery of the new food and drink strategy - ‘Ambition 2030’ – through a new £10 million funding package.

An independent panel has been established to review applications and determine which projects will receive funding from the £3 million Beatrice Partnership Fund. The Beatrice Partnership Fund, which was launched in December 2016 and is associated with the Beatrice offshore wind farm currently under construction in the Moray Firth, is part of a wider package of benefits being offered by Beatrice Offshore Windfarm Limited (BOWL), the joint venture partnership behind the wind farm.
