REDUCE WATER WASTE: THERE'S LIFE IN EVERY DROP

17th October 2010

The Highland Council has launched its 'Reduce Water Waste' campaign today, which aims to raise awareness and promote water minimisation in schools and amongst all council staff and Members.

While we each use 150 litres of water every day, we waste a third of this!

Reducing our water use will:

* Save money and energy
* Reduce our carbon emissions
* Contribute to the continuing health of our valuable ecosystems

Visit www.highland.gov.uk/waterminimisation for more information on water use, the impacts of water waste and useful tips on how you can reduce it! The website also contains water conservation information, tips, fun activities and games for kids.

If you have any suggestions on how we can raise awareness of water waste and/or reduce our water use, please contact green.council[AT]highland.gov.uk

As part of its Carbon Management Plan the Highland Council is committed to reducing its carbon emissions by 12% by 2012. In order to meet this target, the Council must reduce water use by 10%, as it is estimated that the pumping, treating and heating of water accounts for 5% of carbon emissions. Reducing our water use will also save money as the majority of council buildings are now metered. Reductions will be achieved through a combination of behavioural change and water efficiency measures like spray taps being installed in council buildings
