Event highlights Gaelic career pathways for pupils

A Gaelic Careers Event - Siuthad! Go On! which took place last month (9 November 2023) at Eden Court in Inverness attracted pupils from eight secondary schools across Highland.

Members of The Highland Council’s Gaelic Committee welcomed the resumption of the in-person Siuthad! Go On! event which last took place in 2019.

A short video featuring highlights of the Siuthad event has been launched today and can be viewed on The Highland Council’s YouTube at this link. (external link)

Pupils from Lochaber, Mallaig, Ardnamurchan, Ullapool, Glen Urquhart, and Thurso High Schools, Inverness Royal Academy, and Dingwall Academy had the face-to-face opportunity to take part in workshops with BBC Alba, Fèisean nan Gàidheal, FC Sonas, SDS on skills for work and Social Enterprise Academy. The workshops were all delivered in Gaelic.

Chair of the Council’s Gaelic Committee, Cllr Calum Munro said: “I would like to thank the many teachers who supported - and the pupils who attended this event which highlighted several career pathways for our young people to pursue through Gaelic.

“A huge thanks also goes to Skills Development Scotland and Highland Council’s Gaelic Team for organising the event and to the organisations that funded the event including Bòrd na Gàidhlig, HIE, SDS and Highland Council.

“Not only does this event help to deliver a key outcome in the Council’s Gaelic Plan it also supports the Council’s Programme “Our Future Highland - Ar Gàidhealtachd Ri Teachd” commitments to continue to promote the Gaelic language and to deliver positive destinations for our young people.”

In addition to the workshops provided, various organisations took exhibitions stands at Siuthad! Go On! to engage with the young people attending including University of Edinburgh, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, University of the Highlands and Islands, the Crofting Commission, Bòrd na Gàidhlig, Historic Environment Scotland, Spòrs Gàidhlig, Young Scot, The Highland Council and Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

Councillors were informed of feedback from Inverness Royal Academy, Gaelic Teacher, Catriona MacPhee, who said regarding the event: "Our pupils were very much looking forward to attending this event. Gaelic speakers are very much needed in the workforce, and this will be an excellent opportunity for the young people to see where their skills may be needed as well as encouraging them to think about their future career pathways.

“They got a glimpse of a wide variety of professions and options as well as getting a valuable opportunity to ask any questions they may have. It is also a golden opportunity for the pupils to meet young Gaels from other schools and areas. A great event in every way!”
