The Highland Council's Early Learning & Childcare (North) Consultation is now live, and we want to hear from those living in the Lairg, Dornoch, Golspie, Farr, Scourie, Durness, Kinlochbervie, Tongue, Wick and Thurso area. The survey is open until Wednesday 31 July 2024.

About this survey - The ELC consultation survey is carried out every two years to help us get a better idea of family's ELC needs by area. The ELC (North) service value your feedback and ask that people complete the survey.

The survey is about Early Learning and Childcare (ELC) services, and includes questions for families who:

are currently using ELC,
have used ELC in the past,
are not currently using any ELC services.

Education Committee Chair, Cllr John Finlayson said: "Our ELC staff and service value feedback from people who currently use ELC provision in the North, may use in the future or have used in the past to contribute to the consultation. This enables a wide range of feedback and data to be gathered that helps us better understand the requirements on an area by area basis.

"We understand that certain areas across Highland experience different ELC challenges and needs at varying times, and by carrying out the consultation every two years it allows us to capture those changes and identify patterns which in turn informs our ELC service delivery. The consultation will be rolled out to other areas of Highland over the coming months."

Funded ELC provision is free to parents, funded by the Scottish Government. If your child is 3 or 4 years old and some 2 year olds dependant on eligibility criteria, you can get up to 1,140 hours of funded ELC a year (around 30 hours a week in term time or 23 hours a week over the whole year). Funding is available from the term after your child turns 3 (August, January or April) and depending on their start date (if not starting in August) they will get pro-rata hours.

Still time to return Latheron, Lybster and Clyth Community Council election ballots

Anyone eligible to vote in the contested Latheron, Lybster and Clyth Community Council election is reminded that their postal ballot papers need to be completed and returned in the pre-paid envelope provided by 12 noon on Thursday, 8 October 2026.   Candidates standing were invited to submit a statement to support their candidacy and these statements are provided in the envelopes mailed out along with the ballot papers to all eligible voters.

Highland Council proceeds to procurement for a new electric Corran Ferry

The Highland Council has reached another significant milestone in the delivery of a replacement Corran Ferry, with the procurement for a new electric vessel.   Funded through a £58 million investment from the Inverness and Highland City-Region Deal, including £28 million from the Scottish Government for the new electric vessel, £20 million from the UK Government and £10 million from The Highland Council towards landside infrastructure, the project will deliver a modern replacement ferry service for one of Scotland's busiest single-vessel crossings.

Polling will take place on Thursday 1 October 2026 to elect one of five candidates standing in The Highland Council's Wick and East Caithness Ward 3 by-election.  Voters are being reminded to make sure they are ready to cast their vote.
