Ministerial visit to Ardnamurchan High School

The Cabinet Minister for Education and Life-long learning, Mike Russell dropped in on Ardnamurchan High School on Friday 2nd March en-route to the formal opening of Acharacle Primary School.
The Highland Council's Director of Education, Culture and Sport , Hugh Fraser, and Acting Head of Education Calum Macsween together with councillors, Michael Foxley, Drew Millar and Bill Fernie joined Head Teacher Chris Millar-Craig and Parent Council Chair Sean Turner in welcoming Mike Russell to Ardnamurchan High School.
Mr Russell met with Head Girl, Lucy MacMillan and Head Boy, Craig Griggs along with their deputies Nicole MacIver and Jacob Green and Gaelic Medium pupils Duncan Foxley and Charlie Plemming over break.
Lucy MacMillan said: "Mr Russell chatted to us over break and we talked about the school and what we liked but also how expensive housing is here for everyone in the community. I have also e-mailed him directly thanking him for talking to us, but that I had also wanted the time to talk about the importance of funding and adequate staffing to give us enough choice and stability in our curriculum'
Following coffee break, Mr Russell enjoyed a tour of the community and school facilities, also meeting Eoghan Carmichael, Centre Coordinator.
Mr Russell clearly enjoyed his visit and was duly impressed with the resources and with the pupils and staff of Ardnamurchan High School. Prior to a light lunch, Mr Russell and Mr Millar-Craig had the opportunity for a frank and positive discussion on rural education and the good learning teaching inherent in the Curriculum for Excellence.
Head teacher Chris Millar-Craig, staid: "We had a very positive discussion which focussed on the value of rural education and on the positive support needed for the next steps in the development of Curriculum for Excellence. This was a helpful and fruitful discussion."
A subsequent comment from the Minister on Twitter stated: "I had a couple of hours at Ardnamurchan High School in Strontian, where I was greeted by the senior pupils and shown round by the Head Teacher Chris Millar-Craig. It is a very impressive place, not just a lovely building but a purposeful and happy school at the heart of the community."

Members of Highland Council's Economy and Infrastructure Committee today (2 May 2024) approved the local authority's draft Ecology Strategy and Action Plan which will now move forward to an 12-week public consultation. The Ecology Strategy sets out an ambitious set of actions to tackle biodiversity loss and address the ecological emergency.
Economy and Infrastructure Committee members today (2 May 2024) agreed to direct £100K from the Council's share of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) to fund a new staff training programme at the Inverness Castle Experience. The funding will enable the project team to provide specialist visitor attraction training to young people identified through partners at Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) and the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI).
The Housing and Property Committee met on Wednesday 1 May 2024 and noted the Housing Service performance report 2023/24 that met the agreed priorities and associated initiatives in the Local Housing Strategy 2023-2028. The report highlighted a number of achievements in 2023/24 in increasing housing supply.

Convener of the Council, Cllr Bill Lobban said: "I am delighted to say that Kate Lackie, Malcolm MacLeod and Allan Gunn have been appointed as Assistant Chief Executives with The Highland Council.
As intimated in Highland Council's budget plan, a new senior management structure is to be implemented following approval by Council 14th March. It reconfigures the senior management team into two layers, rather than three and brings Highland Council into line with other benchmarked authorities.
Today, Morrison Construction introduced some of their local apprentices who are working on the UK Governments' Levelling Up Funded refurbishment project at the Northern Meeting Park in Inverness. All these apprentices have been recruited from the Highland area.
The by-election to elect a councillor to represent Ward 19 - Inverness South on The Highland Council has been won by Duncan Cameron McDonald - Independent who was one of the eight candidates who contested the vacancy. Voters in the ward went to the poll yesterday (Thursday 11 April) and the by-election count was held this morning in The Highland Council Headquarters in Inverness.
