A mobile operating theatre, supported by more than £2.3 million Scottish Government funding, will enable almost 350 elective surgeries to go ahead for patients in Orkney and Shetland. The specialist unit has opened at Gilbert Bain Hospital in Shetland and will allow cataract and orthopaedic joint operations to go ahead for patients who have faced delays in receiving treatment due to the pandemic and may have otherwise had to travel to the mainland for their procedure.

All short-term let properties will require a licence to ensure they are safe and the people providing them are suitable, under legislation approved by the Scottish Parliament. Local authorities will be required to establish a short-term lets licensing scheme by 1 October 2022, and existing hosts and operators will have until 1 April 2023 to apply for a licence.

New figures today (January 20, 2022) show Ministry of Defence (MOD) expenditure with industry and commerce in Scotland in 2020/21 was £1.989 billion. This is the equivalent of £360 per person in Scotland.

Legislation to end the harmful practice of setting ‘glue traps' is to be brought forward by the Scottish Government in order to protect animal welfare. The Scottish Animal Welfare Commission (SAWC) undertook a review of the use of glue traps and concluded that there are significant animal welfare issues related to their use, not only for rodents but also for non-target species such as wild birds.

New research has been carried out which will shed some light on how street lighting could be used to pave the way for autonomous vehicles in the future. Closed circuit television and wireless technology that enables vehicles to communicate is among the kit that could be neatly stored inside the lanterns of street lights alongside the National Highways network.

UK average house prices increased by 10.0% over the year to November 2021, up from 9.8% in October 2021. The average UK house price was £271,000 in November 2021, which is £25,000 higher than this time last year.

Real wages officially began to fall in November, and the current period of shrinking pay packets is likely to get worse before it starts to ease in the second half of 2022, the Resolution Foundation said today (Tuesday) in response to the latest ONS labour market statistics. Real regular average weekly earnings wages fell by 1 per cent in November off the back of rising inflation (CPI rose to 4.6 per cent) and falling nominal wage growth (down to 3.5 per cent).
