Salmon Reported rod catch of salmon (45,366) is the third lowest since records began, and 92% of the previous 5-year average. Catches have decreased from a high in 2010 and the 2020 records are consistent with a general pattern of decline in numbers of wild salmon returning to Scotland, although the impact of the coronavirus pandemic complicates comparisons with previous years.

Scotland's onshore GDP grew by 2.1% in March, according to statistics announced today by the Chief Statistician. Output remains 5.4% below the pre-pandemic level in February 2020, and has fallen by 0.9% during the recent restrictions since October 2020.

Scottish Ministers will enter structured talks with the Scottish Green Party, supported by the civil service, with a view to reaching a formal Co-operation Agreement. The initiative is part of a refreshed pledge to change politics in Scotland for the better by working with opposition parties to find the best solutions to the toughest of problems, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has said.

Scotland's recovery from the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic will be driven by an ambitious programme to build a modern, high-tech economy while staying true to enduring values of fairness and compassion, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has said. Outlining her priorities for Government to Parliament today, she added that tackling the pandemic remained the immediate priority but people in Scotland should have the right to decide their future when the current crisis has passed.

A £500,000 fund will help places of worship to take security measures against hate crime. Faith communities can apply for grants from the Hate Crime Security Fund, developed by the Scottish Government in partnership with Police Scotland.

American Foulbrood (AFB) found in the Stanley An outbreak of American Foulbrood (AFB) has been found in a single hive in an apiary in the Stanley area of Perthshire. The infected hive was detected by the beekeeper with the disease being confirmed by SASA on 21 May 2021.

Regional development agency Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) plans to establish Space Hub Sutherland as a core part of the launch capability required to meet the UK's ambitions to be a competitive player in the growing international space market. Up to 12 launches a year could take place from Sutherland, sending small, commercial satellites into orbit for Earth observation and other purposes, including monitoring and understanding climate change.

The UK economy grew by 2.1% in March, bringing the UK's quarterly GDP contraction in Q1 2021 to -1.5%. Services - which has driven most of the growth across the economy in the latest month - grew by 1.9% in March as schools reopened and the economy geared up for its recovery.

Members of today's Recovery, Improvement and Transformation Board were provided with an update of the early progress of the Transformation Programme, which consists of nine key projects that form a major part of the Council’s Health and Prosperity Strategy, which was approved in March 2021. £3.7m will be invested over 24 months in these key projects, which are projected to generate an estimated £18.7m of savings, efficiencies, cost mitigation and cost avoidance.
