Proposed changes to Christmas and New Year extended opening at licensed premises
The Highland Licensing Board is consulting on proposed changes to extended opening hours at pubs, restaurants and clubs in Highland over the Christmas and New Year period from 2019 onwards.   If the proposed changes are adopted, they will restrict extended opening for alcohol sales to Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Hogmanay and New Year's Day if these fall on other days of the week.

Highland Council has become the first local authority in Scotland to develop a holistic strategy and action plan to reduce the consumption of single use plastics from its sites and schools, and the wider community.   The strategy and action plan was approved at a meeting of the Council's Environment, Development and Infrastructure Committee today (8 November 2018).

The Council remains on track to provide much-needed affordable homes.  Members of the Environment, Development and Infrastructure Committee today (Thursday 8 November 2018) have approved the Council's Strategic Housing Investment Plan for 2019-2024 that will see a minimum of 500 units being built each year of which 70% will be for affordable rent and 30% for low cost home ownership.

Caithness is set to have improved connections including to London, Manchester and Birmingham as Flybe aligns its Wick John O'Groats - Aberdeen service to the wider UK network operated from Aberdeen.   Flybe franchise partner, Eastern Airways, will re-time its flights from 12 November 2018 by offering a 12.45pm departure (Monday to Thursday) from Aberdeen that links with Flybe's northbound services from London Heathrow, London City, Manchester and Birmingham along with the southbound flight from Wick at 1.45pm linking with the afternoon London-bound flights.

Illicit cigarettes uncovered by Highland Trading Standards with help from two four-legged friends
Thousands of illicit cigarettes have been uncovered by Highland Council's Trading Standards Officers with a little help from two specially-trained, four-legged detectives.   Spaniels Dixie and Daisy from Consumer Protection Dogs were enlisted by the region's Trading Standards team to detect the smell of tobacco.

The Highland Council has announced the publication of updated guidance on financial contributions required from new developments towards new infrastructure and services.   The Developer Contributions Supplementary Guidance now forms part of the Council's Development Plan which is used to determine planning applications in Highland.

The Highland Council and partners HITRANS and NHS Highland have welcomed £1.6m awarded this week (Wednesday, 31 October 2018) from Transport Scotland's Low Carbon Travel and Transport (LCTT) Challenge Fund.   The funding has been warmly received by partner agencies for their Low Carbon and Active Travel Hub project in Inverness which is being match funded by Highland Council £265,000; NHS Highland £40,000 and HITRANS £15,000.
