Caithness and Sutherland economy on the menu at HIE business breakfast
Business and community leaders in Caithness and Sutherland will be meeting enterprise bosses tomorrow to discuss local and national issues.   Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) is hosting a business breakfast in Thurso with representatives from around 30 business and community groups operating locally.

New byelaws restrict public drinking in Inverness Beauly and Ardersier
Two new byelaws restricting public drinking in Inverness, Beauly and Ardersier have been approved by the Scottish Government and will come into force on Friday 30 November.   This follows discussions between The Highland Council and Northern Constabulary, and consultation with the community.

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (November, 13th) sold 44 prime cattle.  Prime bullocks (12) averaged 209.3p (+5.0p) and sold to 215p per kg and £1,324.80 gross.

Defence technology experts look to future of healthcare
Security and defence experts from across the UK will be showing how technology usually used by the military and defence can be used to save lives at home.   John Innes from Selex Galileo and Giles Huby of Copernicus Technology will both be presenting at the P4 Digital 2012 conference at Eden Court in Inverness on November 20 and 21.

MSP encouraged by Community Broadband action
Highlands & Islands Labour MSP, Rhoda Grant, has welcomed the launch of a community broadband initiative – Community Broadband Scotland (CBS) – which will act as a one-stop-shop for all community broadband needs – supporting rural communities to find solutions to the challenges of rural broadband delivery.   As part of the Scottish Government’s CBS initiative a £5m ‘Rural Seed Fund’ is being established to invest in community projects over the next three years.

Highland launch of The Youth & Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) Scotland
An innovative school based project, designed to encourage young people to think about prominent social issues and build strong partnerships with local charities is being launched in Grantown on Tuesday (20th November 2012).   The Wood Family Trust is working in partnership with Scottish Hydro and The Highland Council to establish YPI in the Highlands.

HIAL Airports Get Ready For Winter
Scottish airports operator HIAL has launched its winter operation plan which aims to ensure passengers across its network of 11 airports keep flying this winter.   The company has invested £400,000 on snow clearing equipment and a new de-icer storage facility at Inverness, and is also taking part, for a second winter, in a CAA trial aimed at accurately reporting runway surface conditions.

Update Week commencing 5th November 2012 Energy: Scottish & Southern Energy (SSE) this week announced the signing of a Partnership Agreement with the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI).  SSE is a key player in the development of the energy sector in the north, both as a developer and generator of renewable energy.

Highland Licensing Board abolishes midnight door entry policy
Members of The Highland Licensing Board have voted to abolish the door entry policy for premises with late night opening hours, which requires admission by midnight, with the change set to take effect after the board’s next scheduled meeting on 18 December, this year.   Convener Councillor Maxine Smith used her casting vote in favour of change after a 5-5 vote following a hearing involving a number of presentations from invited parties from each of the “for/against” sides of the argument to retain or remove the door entry policy.

Warm Homes Fund launched
A £50 million fund that will invest in green energy projects to help heat homes across Scotland has been officially launched today.   Housing Minister Margaret Burgess announced that two pilot schemes in Glasgow and the Highlands will be the first to be benefit from the Warm Homes Fund.

Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon today visited construction of the new Forth Replacement Crossing as the project reached a major milestone.   Ms Sturgeon was at the project’s Rosyth dockyard site to see huge sections that are being craned out on to Beamer Rock as part of work on the foundation for the bridge’s central tower.

Government commits to £7.45 Scottish Living Wage
Finance Secretary John Swinney today announced a new living wage of £7.45 for employees working in parts of the public sector under the Government’s pay policy and urged employers in the private, public and third sectors to follow suit.   The commitment is in line with the Scottish Living Wage Campaign and the Living Wage Foundation’s new recommended living wage announced today, £7.45 per hour, which encourages employers to ensure all staff on lower incomes receive a fair level of pay.

Beinneun Wind Farm Approved
Planning consent has been granted for a wind farm which will bring £30 million in to the Highland economy and generate £500,000 a year for local communities, including scholarships to send local young people into further education.   Energy Minister Fergus Ewing has approved the Beinneun wind farm, near Invergarry, Highlands.

Businesses In Scotland 2012
Scotland’s Chief Statistician today released Businesses in Scotland 2012.   The main findings are: The total number of private sector enterprises in Scotland was estimated at 341,360 as at March 2012 – this is the highest level since 2000 (the earliest estimate in the time series) Between March 2011 and March 2012 the estimated number of enterprises increased by 9.9 per cent (30,835 enterprises) Small enterprises (0-49 employees) accounted for almost all of the rise in the total number of enterprises, and 83 per cent of the increase was due to an increase in unregistered businesses (i.e.
