A group of five staff members from Caithness Horizons have successfully completed an EDI National Award in Cultural and Heritage Venue Operations.  Caithness Horizons is the only museum in the Highlands to have staff that have achieved this award.

Success Of Council Payment Strategy
A new payment strategy introduced by The Highland Council in April of this year is proving a success, with improving acceptance by customers of the new arrangements that are achieving significant efficiency savings.   Since April, cash and cheque payments of Council Tax, rent, non-domestic rates and debtor invoices were no longer accepted at Service Points or the council headquarters Cash Office.

Highland Pupils Cast Off On New Maritime Skills Course
Twelve senior pupils start a new course in maritime skills in Portree this week from six Highland secondary schools.   From Monday 3 October an SQA Skills for Work Maritime Skills Course is being offered on the curriculum to S5 and S6 pupils.

Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd - Sale 6th October 2011
FORT WILLIAM, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (October, 6th) sold 2,242 store sheep of all classes.  Lambs (1,385) averaged £32.33 per head and sold to £60 gross for Suffolk crosses from Blargie Farm, Laggan.

Bower Will No Longer Have A Community Council
Bower will no longer have a community council after it was revealed that not enough candidates came forward to make up half the designated number to form a council.   All of the other community councils in Caithness will be formed as previously but there will be no elections in Caithness as there were only enough candidates to fill the posts and not requiring an election.

Week commencing 26th September: Enabling Activities: I met this week with Susan Johnston of JobCentre Plus, to discuss their important role in supporting the area's economy.  I also introduced her to colleagues form Highland Council's Employability service in the area.

Council Leader welcomes 11th hour reprieve for tugs
The Highland Council Leader Councillor Michael Foxley has joined in the welcome of the 11th hour decision by the UK Government to offer a three-month reprieve for the two emergency towing vessels based at Stornoway and Shetland while work continues on finalising a new longer-term contract.   The tugs, owned by a private company, JP Knight and on contract to the Maritime Coastguard Service, were due to have been withdrawn from service on Friday 30 September.

Unfair dismissal rule changes could save british Business £6million
Changes to unfair dismissal rules which could save nearly £6 million a year for British business have been announced today by Business Secretary Vince Cable and Chancellor George Osborne.   Today's decision will see the qualification period for the right to claim unfair dismissal extended from one to two years.

Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd - Sale 30th September 2011
DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (September, 30th) sold 8,980 store lambs including 1,087 sheep on behalf of Lewis Livestock Producers.  Lambs (7,673) averaged £44.55 and sold to £78 gross for Cheviot ewe lambs from Inver Croft, Tain.

World Beneath The Waves Revealed In New Report
For the first time the range of stunning landforms hidden beneath Scotland's seas has been highlighted in a new report published by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH).   As part of a project to identify marine habitats of high conservation value, earth science experts have prioritised 34 key geological and geomorphological areas of national and international interest on the Scottish seabed.

The Highland Council is responsible for 4,200 miles (6,700km) of roads.  The Council's winter roads maintenance budget for 2011/12 is £4.7 million.

Community Learning And Leisure Become A Trust
High Life Highland takes over community learning and leisure services From Saturday (1 October 2011) High Life Highland, an arms length company with charitable status, takes over the management and delivery of community learning and leisure services from The Highland Council.   More than 1,000 staff working in adult learning, archives, arts, leisure facilities, libraries, museums, outdoor education, sport and youth work will transfer from the employment of the Council to the new company.

Candidates considering serving on their local Community Council for the next four years are being reminded that the nomination deadline for election is only one week away.   To be able to stand for election, candidates must return their nomination forms to The Highland Council by 4 pm on Tuesday 4 October.
