Today (1 April 2009) responsibility for providing business advice has transferred from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) to local authorities.  Advice will be provided through the Business Gateway service which already operates in the rest of Scotland In The Highland Council area it will be managed by the Council's enterprise trust, Highland Opportunity and will be the first point of access for information and advice on all services to business and social enterprises in the Highlands.

Red Tape Cut To Help Disabled Home Owners
A nationwide scheme which helps disabled people carry out essential home adaptations has been enhanced.   Changes arising from the implementation of the Housing (Scotland) Act 2006 will trigger a simpler and fairer system of financial help.

Dingwall and Highland Marts Ltd - Sale 1 April 2009
DINGWALL, Dingwall and Highland Marts Ltd, (April 1st) sold 810 store cattle and 23 OTM cattle at their annual show and sale, where all classes met a fantastic trade.  Bullocks (482) averaged 186.6p and sold to 235.2p per kg for a pen of 253kg Luing crosses from No.

Good News for Highland Businesses
The Highland Council has secured match funding from the European Regional Development Fund to deliver a growth fund of �1.4m for new and established Highland businesses.   The money will be administered by the Council's enterprise trust Highland Opportunity to part fund its Highland Business Growth Fund which provides support targeted at existing businesses operating in the priority sectors of Tourism and Culture, Energy, Food and Drink, Life and other Sciences and the Creative Industries, together with new start ups.  
New Stroke Services Developed At Caithness General
Caithness General Hospital in Wick has developed new services for Stroke patients in the north and is one of the first Rural General Hospital's in Scotland to be offering these treatments.   The first of these services, the Novel Rapid Access Neurovascular (TIA) service will start up at the hospital on Thursday 2nd April.

Clubs, groups, organisations and societies in the Highlands can now register on The Highland Council's new free community information website www.high-societies.org that was launched on Monday 30th March 2009 at Dingwall Library.   Developed by the Council's library service, High-Societies is designed to signpost members of the public to essential contact information for not-for-profit organisations and to their existing websites where appropriate.

Consumers warned "Be on your guard" by Highland Council Trading Standards Highland Council Trading Standards are asking members of the public to be vigilant following recent report about a double glazing doorstep selling firm operating in the Inverness area.   On Friday, last week, Highland Council Trading Standards and Northern Constabulary visited a concerned consumer's home after receiving her call regarding selling practices of a double glazing firm.

Churches Highlight New Evidence On Problem Gambling
Today the Commons Delegated Legislative Committee will review Government proposals to double the stake and the prize money for pub gambling machines.  For the first time ever, this would increase the levels of prize money available to casual gamblers to above the level of weekly benefits.

LEADER Funds Start To Filter Through
Since the launch of the Highland LEADER Programme in excess of �400,000 of funding has already been allocated to 27 successful local projects and plans across the Highlands.   Thanks to funding of �3,280 from both the Skye, and the Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh LEADER Area Partnerships the Skye & Lochalsh Council for Voluntary Organisations is now able to organise, deliver and evaluate a capacity building event aimed at benefiting community groups in Skye and Wester Ross.

Dingwall & Highland Marts - Sale 25th March 2009
DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts, (March, 25th) sold 3,355 store lambs, breeding & feeding sheep.   Lambs (1,706) averaged �52.60 and sold to �93 gross for Beltex crosses from Upperton, Glenurquhart.

Council Confirms Commitment to Develop Tourism In The Highlands
A new partnership agreement between The Highland Council and VisitScotland for 2009/10 could see the Council contributing up to �445,000 to be used to promote the Highlands as a top tourism destination.   Last May Members agreed to support a review of the existing agreement with VisitScotland and although the final report will not be available until the end of the Month at last week's Planning, Environment and Development Committee the Council confirmed its commitment to develop Highland Tourism in partnership with the business sector, VisitScotland, EventScotland and HIE.
