Streetscape works take shape At Dingwall
This week sees completion of new Caithness slab footways on the south side of Dingwall High Street as the first phase of a �947,000 package of town centre improvements starts to take shape on the ground.   Throughout the project, the Council has been working closely with the Dingwall community through regular stakeholders' meetings which are chaired by the Ward 9 Councillors.

A Trip Down Memory Lane For Christmas
The Highland Council has announced details of an exciting project in Inverness to enable children of all ages to take a trip down memory lane in the city's Victorian Market.   As part of the Inverness Winter Festival's Countdown to Christmas programme, the Council has announced that the Inverness Local History Forum is to stage an exhibition of Christmas toys and memorabilia during the first three weekends of December.

Harrods buyers tempted north of the border
Scotland Food and Drink, in conjunction with Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), is hosting an exclusive 'Meet the Buyer' visit from Harrods today (11 November).  The event, aimed at food and drink businesses across Scotland, gives businesses the opportunity to showcase their products as part of the Access to Markets programme.

HIE leads the way in region's renewable energy
Helping to drive forward the region's renewable energy sector Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) is this week sponsoring a conference focusing on challenges facing the marine renewables industry.   The Scottish Renewables Marine Energy seminar takes place tomorrow (Thursday November 12) at the Drumossie Hotel, Inverness bringing together some of Scotland’s leading representatives from the marine energy industry.

As reported in July this year, The North Highland College (NHC) and The Wick Society formed a partnership to digitise the Johnson Collection, owned by the Wick Society.   The Johnson collection is an invaluable historical photographic archive in excess of 50,000 glass-plate negatives taken by successive generations of the Johnson family between 1863 and 1976 capturing the social and industrial history of Caithness, in particular the impact of the herring fishing industry.

Marine energy challenges on the agenda at HIE-backed seminar
A seminar focusing on challenges facing the marine renewables industry will take place at the Drumossie Hotel in Inverness next Thursday (November 12).   Sponsored by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), the Scottish Renewables Marine Energy Conference will bring together some of Scotland�s leading representatives from the marine energy industry.

Invicta New Park �300 million biomass fund launched
Invicta Capital, a leading provider of investment opportunities for private clients has launched a new �300 million fund dedicated to the construction and operation of an identified portfolio of biomass combined heat and power (CHP) plants in Scotland.   New Park worked with Invicta Capital to identify this portfolio of nine medium sized plants located on existing industrial and business development parks or brown field sites in Scotland.

Kessock Bridge Delays Forecast for 2011
Public asked for views on measures to combat Kessock Bridge delays caused by resurfacing The public are being invited to comment on the best ways to ease disruption that will result from the introduction of single-lane traffic movement on the Kessock Bridge to accommodate resurfacing work, expected in 2011.   Members of The Highland Council's Black Isle Ward are holding a forum next week on Thursday 12 November from 6 to 8 pm at Culbokie Primary School.

Having your say on the future of Highland
The consultation on the Main Issues Report for the Highland wide Local Development Plan is coming to an end on the 9th of November 2009.   The consultation was formally launched in Wick on the 31st August 2009 and since then the Development Plans Team has been working to encourage feedback on the Main Issues Report, draft Local Transport, Housing and Coastal Development Strategies.

Ownership of Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd has moved from the public sector to the private sector.   It follows the successful completion at the weekend of the sale by the UK Atomic Energy Authority of its commercial interests to Babcock International Group PLC.

Economic Downturn Action Plan Begins To Pay Dividends.
Highland councillors have commended their money advice and benefit maximisation teams for helping the public cope better with the effects of the recession.   In a report providing a commentary on the current economic situation and implementation of the Council's Economic Downturn Action Plan, councillors were advised that over the first six months of this financial year, benefit maximisation staff were able to realise annual benefits to claimants of �785,000.

Pupils living in Glenelg, Wester Ross can now cycle to school each day safe in the knowledge that not only will their bikes stay dry in the newly erected bike shed but the solar panels on the shed roof will be busy producing energy for them to use in their own classrooms.   The 2kW of renewable energy from the panelled roof will feed directly into the 39 pupil school and is expected to produce approximately 2,100kWh of annual consumption which is about the same as a small house or flat.

Free Offer Should Ring Alarm Bells
Highland Council Trading Standards Service is warning householders to be on their guard if they receive a phone call informing them that they have won a free house alarm.   Unsuspecting consumers are being 'cold called' by phone with the news that they have won a 'free' alarm and that a representative will be round to fit it for them.

The Highland Council is encouraging local suppliers to come along to the last four of a series of 10 Procurement road shows.   Entitled "Win More Business!" the events are aimed at helping local suppliers to develop their skills in tendering for public sector contracts.

Developing a 5-year action plan to meet Highland's housing needs
A recent housing study undertaken for The Highland Council has highlighted a chronic and persistent lack of affordable housing in the Highlands.   It also shows that due to high house prices and low incomes less than a third of new households in the Highlands (29%) have enough money to buy housing.

HIE supporting businesses towards economic recovery
Business and community groups across the Highlands and Islands are making use of a number of initiatives offered by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).   As part of the third update of the Scottish Government Economic Recovery Plan, HIE has this week highlighted a number of proven initiatives which are available in the area.

Options for two new Highland primary school projects proposed
Councillor Bill Fernie, Chairman of The Highland Council's Education Culture and Sport Committee has confirmed that a report will be considered by the Committee on Thursday 12 November recommending options for two new school projects in the Highlands, which could attract Scottish Government funding.   He said: "In common with all local authorities, The Highland Council very recently received a request to identify primary school building projects which might attract funding from the Scottish Government under their recently announced school building programme.
