Requirements for voter identification brought in by the previous UK Government should be scrapped, the Minister for Parliamentary Business for the Scottish Government has said. Jamie Hepburn has highlighted evidence from the Electoral Commission that the new requirements kept potential voters away from the ballot box at the recent UK Parliamentary election, and fears misunderstanding around the need for ID could have a similar impact in Scotland.

The Bank of England may have cut interest rates by 0.25% but a number of big mortgage lenders have increased their prices this week. The IFS discusses Inheritance tax changes in the UK budget, In the recent budget, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced a £40 billion tax increase, pushing tax as a share of national income to an all time UK high. Just 6% of that came from an increase in inheritance tax, and just a small fraction of that will come from farmers.

Proposals to simplify crofting regulation, encourage more use of common grazings and a range of other changes have received high levels of support in a recent consultation. The Scottish Government has published an independent analysis of the responses to the consultation on proposals for Crofting Law Reform, together with those responses where consent to publish was given.
Young businesses and social enterprises in the Highlands and Islands looking to increase productivity, innovation and employment can apply for funding from HIE. The fourth round of the Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) Young Business Capital Grant (YBCG) is now open to businesses that have been trading for less than five years with up to 250 full-time equivalent employees.

50 is the new 20 for the 13 million families that make up an older, modern-day low-to-middle income Britain, who are also more likely to suffer from poor health or a disability compared to three decades ago. But despite these headwinds, which have come to the fore since the pandemic, lower-income families are far more likely to be in work today than they were in the mid-1990s, according to new research published on 13 November 2024 by the Resolution Foundation.
