Monthly construction output is estimated to have decreased 0.5% in volume terms in July 2023; this follows a 1.6% increase in June 2023, with the monthly value in level terms in July 2023 at £15,546 million. The decrease in monthly output came solely from a 1.3% decrease in repair and maintenance, with new work increasing 0.1% on the month.

The latest Scottish Government Workforce Diversity and Inclusion Information statistics have been updated today by Scotland's Chief Statistician. These statistics are based on data available as at 31 December 2022 and cover the diversity of Scottish Government permanent staff in core directorates, some agencies and some non-ministerial departments and the experiences of different demographic groups.

Research by Solace, the organisation that represents Scottish council chief executives, estimates that at least 125,000 more homes are required to meet the current demand of 243,603 currently on the waiting list. The target of 110,000 homes by the Scottish Government by 2032 will not even meet half the need.

There were 23,346 all-sector new build homes completed in Scotland in the year to end June 2023, according to quarterly statistics on housebuilding and affordable housing supply published today by Scotland's Chief Statistician. This is an increase of 7% (1,481 homes) on the 21,865 completions in the previous year, and the highest annual figure to end June since 2008.

New recruits with skills in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are in high demand to harness the benefits of emerging technologies in the UK space sector, according to a new survey. The latest research into space skills across businesses, government and academia shows that nearly all space organisations experience some skills-related issues (95%), well over a third (37%) are missing expertise in software and data analysis, and nearly a quarter (21%) are expressing the need for AI and machine learning specifically, higher than any other technical area.

The Highland Council, with support from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, is inviting Highland businesses to apply for funding to support the costs of green skills training for their workforce. The number of vacancies in June to August 2023 was 989,000, a decrease of 64,000 from March to May 2023. Vacancy numbers fell on the quarter for the 14th consecutive period in June to August 2023, down by 6.0% from March to May 2023 with vacancies falling in 13 of the 18 industry sectors.
