Gordon & MacPhail named title sponsor of Highlands & Islands Food & Drink Awards

Energy Set to Spark Further Growth for Moray Businesses
Trade body Energy North is calling on ambitious Moray businesses looking to explore ways to service the energy supply chain to attend a free energy trade information day in Elgin next week (Thursday 18 April).   The event has been organised by Energy North and Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) to raise awareness and encourage Moray businesses to promote their existing capabilities, and by developing their services to capitalise on new supply chain opportunities.

Week Commencing 8th April 2013 Energy/ Business Services: Students from North Highland College’s Engineering apprenticeship programme have just returned from a week in Orkney studying Marine Renewables Safety Training at Orkney College’s Maritime Studies department.  The students (including some from Orkney) are based at Thurso’s state-of-the-art Engineering, Technology & Energy Centre (ETEC), but this tie-up allows students to add crucial maritime safety elements to their final qualification, bringing them closer to opportunities in the energy sector.

Highlands and Islands Enterprise, in partnership with Scottish Development International, is offering an Intermediate Preparing to Export course for companies that are already exporting to 2/3 markets and would like to further develop their export capabilities.   Course kick-off: 2-day residential on 11 & 12 April 2013 (1 nights accommodation and dinner will be provided) Course continues on: 4 additional sessions held over 6-8 weeks: 25th April, 9th May, 23rd May and 6th June 2013 Location: The Norseman Hotel, Wick This programme is fully funded by Smart Exporter, an ambitious new international trade skills programme, and is targeted at Scottish companies that are already exporting and wish to develop their export capabilities to grow their business.

A new package of business IT support for organisations and individuals across the Highlands and Islands is now available.   Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), in partnership with Business Gateway and with support from the Scottish Government, have launched an IT engagement programme, offering online IT guides and group workshops.

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) has this week published its 2013-16 Business Plan which sets out its delivery priorities for the period as it continues to focus on accelerating hazard reduction across its 19-site estate.   The focus at Sellafield will remain on driving forward further progress across the site including a programme of major projects required to decommission the high hazard legacy ponds and silos, while also working towards the completion of the contracts at both the Magnox and Thorp reprocessing plants by the end of the decade.

Round two of the Scottish EDGE is open for entries
After the first round of the Scottish EDGE competition, where over £500,000 was given to help 17 of Scotland’s brightest entrepreneurs, they are ready to start all over again! This next round will award in the region of £750,000 to young Scottish businesses.   The closing date for round two applications is 5pm Tuesday 16 April 2013.  
Government Support for Business R&D and Innovation
20 March 2013 The Government Support for Business R&D and Innovation event is a free workshop to highlight the wide range of Government support available to help small and medium sized enterprises invest in R&D and innovation and to grow their businesses.   Each session will be led by a representative from the relevant delivery body, including HMRC, the Technology Strategy Board, the UK Intellectual Property Office, the Design Council and HIE.

Week Commencing 4th March 2013 Energy: Scottish & Southern Energy (SSE) is currently consulting on the planning application to build new overhead lines from Dounreay to Spittal; from Spittal to Mybster; and for a new substation 3.5km south of Thurso.  Information on the proposals can be found at http://www.sse.com/DounreayMybster/ProjectInformation/ and the full Environmental Statement is also available to view at the Highland Council Service Points in Rotterdam Street, Thurso and Girnigoe Street, Wick.

The owner of Scotland’s busiest snowsports centre is looking for a new operator to run visitor facilities at the resort on its behalf.   Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) built and owns Scotland’s only funicular railway at Cairngorm, along with associated facilities including ski lifts, the base station, shop, visitor centre, and the UK’s highest restaurant.

Energy: Meygen Ltd will be running a "Tier 2 Supply Chain" event on Tuesday 19th March.  The event, which will be by invitation only, is aimed at potential suppliers to the company's first 86MW phase of plans to install tidal devices in the Inner Sound of the Pentland Firth.

Energy: Good news this week from Ignis Biomass Ltd, the owners and operators of the Combined Heat & Power Plant in Wick.  The Company has invested an initial £2.5M in a new biomass boiler, which has now been installed and is operating.

Tourism, Food & Drink: Talent Scotland is currently advertising a Graduate Team Leader post, salary £16,000 p.a., for Natural Retreats who are recruiting for a recent graduate for a 12 month Team Leader role.  The successful graduate will have the opportunity to work closely with an experienced General Manager and with senior members of the Natural Retreats team.

This report was produced by Citizens Advice Bureaux in Highland Introduction In 2011/12 Highland bureaux advised clients on 24166 new benefit issues, on-going clients returning for further advice were further advised on 21303 repeat benefit issues.  The bureau therefore dealt with 45469 benefit issues, 125 issues for every day of the year.
