COVID-19 surveillance up until end of week 4 Coronavirus (COVID-19) activity shows a mixed picture - with some indicators, most notably hospitalisations and Pillar 2 positivity suggesting a modest increase in activity.   The COVID-19 hospital admission rate for week 4 was 6.61 per 100,000 population, a small increase from 5.94 per 100,000 in the previous week.

HMRC Late Payment Interest Rates To Be Revised After Bank Of England Increases Base Rate
HMRC interest rates for late payments will be revised following the Bank of England interest rate rise to 4%.   The Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee announced on 2 February 2023 to increase the Bank of England base rate to 4% from 3.5%.

Bank Rate Increased To 4%
The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) sets monetary policy to meet the 2% inflation target, and in a way that helps to sustain growth and employment.  At its meeting ending on 1 February 2023, the MPC voted by a majority of 7-2 to increase Bank Rate by 0.5 percentage points, to 4%.

Record Borrowing In December Shows Britain Is Far From Out Of The Woods
Recent glimmers of good economic news have yet to feed into the public finances, with borrowing in December around £4 billion higher than market expectations, and nearly £10 billion higher than OBR forecasts (due in partly to the treatment of student loans), the Resolution Foundation said in response to the latest ONS public sector finances.   Borrowing reached £27.4 billion in December - the highest December figure since monthly records began in January 1993 – driven by extra spending on the Energy Price Guarantee (EPG) and a jump in debt-interest costs, reflecting the impact of higher inflation on index-linked gilts.

Housing Cost Struggles Up By 70 Per Cent Since Peak Of The Pandemic
The cost-of-living crisis has left over two-in-five working age households struggling with or falling behind on their housing costs, compared to just over a quarter of households at the peak of the pandemic, according to new Resolution Foundation analysis published on Saturday.   The Foundation's latest Housing Outlook uses data from a new YouGov survey of 10,470 UK adults to examine how the cost-of-living crisis is affecting people’s ability to meet their housing costs, how it varies across tenure, and the implications for households’ financial resilience and personal wellbeing in the months ahead.

BT - facing an uphill battle
BT, the UK's leading telecommunications and network provider, has released results for the nine months to 31 December 2022: Revenue of £15.6bn, down 1% as price increases and improved trading in Openreach and Consumer were offset by declines in the other divisions.   Adjusted EBITDA of £5.9bn, up 3% due to tight cost control and the removal of BT Sport costs.
