The UK and Norway have agreed a new deal for fishing in each other's waters in 2022.   Today (21 December 2021) the UK, negotiating as an independent coastal State, has reached an agreement with Norway on fisheries access and quotas for 2022. These discussions mark the start of a new arrangement between the UK and Norway, in which both parties permit some access to each other's waters and exchange a number of fish quotas in the North Sea and the Arctic.

Funding Of £12.5 Billion For Local Councils In Scotland
Details have been published of how the £12.5 billion in Scottish Government funding for 2022/23 will be distributed to local authorities.   The settlement represents a total cash increase of £917.9 million or 7.9%, which is the equivalent of a real terms rise of 5.1% to support vital local government services.

Online retailers and couriers are experiencing a late avalanche of last-minute gift deliveries, says ParcelHero, as visits to the High Street collapse by 25%.   The home delivery expert ParcelHero says online retailers and couriers are experiencing a 17% surge in late gift deliveries to save Christmas.

£1 billion in support for businesses most impacted by Omicron across the UK
Additional support will be available for businesses who have been impacted by the Omicron variant, the Chancellor, Rishi Sunak announced today (21 December).   Businesses in the hospitality and leisure sectors in England will be eligible for one-off grants of up to £6,000 per premises, plus more than £100 million discretionary funding will be made available for local authorities to support other businesses Government will also cover the cost of Statutory Sick Pay for Covid-related absences for small and medium-sized employers across the UK.

HMRC Urges Businesses To Prepare For January Customs Changes
Some of the temporary Customs and VAT easements introduced on 1 January 2021 for goods moving between Great Britain and the EU will be removed on 1 January 2022.   Businesses trading with the European Union (EU) have less than a month to get ready for new import and exports customs controls which come into force from 1 January 2022.

A new deal for tenants
Plans to deliver a new deal for tenants, with stronger rights, greater protections against eviction and access to greener, higher-quality, more affordable housing, have been launched.   The proposals, which are open to public consultation from today, aim to deliver a fairer rented sector that meets the needs of tenants and welcomes responsible landlords.

Rogue directors who dissolve their companies and avoid paying liabilities to staff, creditors and the taxpayer can now be disqualified from being a director.   The Insolvency Service has been granted new powers to tackle unfit directors who dissolve companies to avoid paying their liabilities.

A framework to improve access to and delivery of NHS gender identity services, backed by £9 million investment has been published.   The NHS Gender Identity Services Strategic Action Framework fulfils commitments in the Programme for Government and Bute House Agreement to publish a plan to improve gender identity healthcare in Scotland by the end of 2021.

Health Secretary Festive Message To Workforce

Physical Proof Of Status Should Be Offered To Eu Citizens
The governments of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are calling on the UK Government to offer EU citizens physical proof of their settled or pre-settled status.   Currently, EU citizens who have secured settled or pre-settled status have no physical documentation to prove that they have the right to reside in the UK and this has been causing problems for citizens' employment and access to services.  
HIE Publishes Results Of Latest Business Panel Survey
This is according to the findings of the latest business panel survey undertaken by Ipsos MORI for Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) in October.   More than a thousand businesses in the region were contacted for their views on topics such as financial health, priorities and concerns.
