Highland Council today announced its biggest ever single investment in roads with an extra £20million capital announced in its budget proposals for the year 2020/21. The budget proposals were announced by Budget Leader Alister MacKinnon at a press conference at Highland Council headquarters.
Following the close of nominations at 12 noon on Wednesday 26 February 2020, the outcome is as follows. 2 Community Councils received more nominations than their maximum membership, which means that postal ballots will now be held for Rogart Community Council and Strathnairn Community Council.

Electronic monitoring and tracking of vessels is part of a package of measures being taken to protect Scotland's inshore fleet. The programme, which will monitor boats in inshore waters, will help establish local fisheries management arrangements and empower local fishers and their coastal communities.

From 6 April 2020, if you're a UK resident and sell a residential property in the UK you'll have 30 days to tell HMRC and pay any Capital Gains Tax owed.

The Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA) has expressed alarm at the impact the Scottish Government's Budget will have on councils' ability to tackle child poverty. COSLA warned that the Government has not considered successive years of cuts, or rising inflation and demand and have therefore put the Government’s own 2030 Child Poverty targets at risk.

Cabinet Secretary for Finance Kate Forbes has reached an agreement with the Scottish Green Party to ensure passage of the Scottish Government's budget at all stages in parliament. The final agreement will increase support for young people, police, climate action and local government.

As part of ongoing works for the second stage of Highland Council's Inverness West Link project motorists are being advised that part of the A82 will be closed with an HGV diversion and General Booth Road will also be closed as indicated. There will be an overnight road closure on the A82 for 4 consecutive nights (Monday 9th March to Thursday 12th March 2020) from 19:00 to 06:00 the following mornings.

The UK Government is heading for the hardest possible Brexit, either through a disastrous 'no deal' or a basic trade agreement that will cause almost as much damage, said Constitution, Europe and External Affairs Secretary Michael Russell. Responding to today's publication of the UK Government’s mandate for talks with the European Union, Mr Russell said its inclusion of red lines on not aligning to EU regulations, and a stated willingness to walk away with 'no deal', was "the worst possible start to negotiations." He said the UK Government’s strategy could cost the Scottish economy between £9 billion and £12.7 billion by 2030 compared with EU membership and warned Scotland’s businesses would be hard hit.

Highlands and Islands Labour MSP David Stewart has called on Parliament to congratulate 6 members of the Stornoway RNLI crew for their outstanding commitment and dedication to their community. Stornoway RNLI coxswain, DI Murray, and crew members, Tony Morrison, Kenny Macarthur, Norman Smith and Donnie Mackinnon, were all recently presented with 20-year long-service badges, and the station's lifeboat operations manager, John MacDonald, was presented with a badge for serving the RNLI for 30 years.

The four UK Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) have agreed to update health advice for travellers returning from certain countries. Anyone who has arrived in the UK from these areas since 19 February is advised to stay indoors and avoid contact with other people, even if they do not have symptoms, and phone their GP or NHS24 on 111 out of hours.

Preparations for a coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in Scotland have been accelerated, as the virus continues to spread beyond China. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon chaired a Scottish Government Resilience meeting (SGoRR) to discuss preparedness in Scotland, following outbreaks in northern Italy and other parts of the world.
"As we enter our fourteenth year of business, we'll be spreading the word about the benefits of saving with the credit union," said HI-Scot's General Manager, David Mackay. "HI-Scot is member led and member run and we offer a range of services." HI-Scot is well established in the Western Isles, where the credit union is based.
An interim update on the development of a new model to assess needs and allocate resource for Additional Support Needs will be reported to the Council's Education Committee on Thursday. The work being carried out is to ensure the Council has a delivery model in place which is agile and flexible to meeting the needs of young people and provides stability for staff.

A letter has been issued to parents of children who have recently returned from an Inverness school trip to Northern Italy. Since their return, advice regarding the incidence of coronavirus COVID19 in the Lombardy region of Italy has changed and as such the school has written to parents to provide guidance in liaison with Public Health relating to any health concerns.
