Council reviews progress towards the Council Programme "Working Together for the Highlands"
PROGRESS towards the Council Programme "Working Together for the Highlands" was reviewed by Highland Council at its meeting yesterday as part of a review of the performance framework which monitors performance against the Programme.   Two commitments are marked as being achieved in 2013-14.

Council Changes Mind On Rose Street Parking Charges In Inverness
Rose Street Parking Prices lowered from 11 May 2015.   HIGHLAND Council Community Services have listened to concerns raised about the Rose Street parking charges which were introduced on 1 April and a revised pricing structure will be implemented from today, 11 May.

Highland Constituencies Under Threat Again Under Tory Boundaries Plan
Highland MSP, Rhoda Grant is warning that the future of three Highland UK Parliamentary constituencies will be put under threat again by Conservative Party plans to push forward with a Boundary Commission review which could see the Highland Council area, which currently returns three MPs to Westminster, fall to two at the next UK Parliament elections, scheduled for 2020.   Rhoda Grant MSP is cautioning that under proposed changes the Highlands will have a reduced voice at Westminster, saying: "The Highlands is one of the most challenging areas for politicians to represent due to the unique geography and size of the region and its constituencies.

Magnificent 'ocean greyhound' sails through Pentland Firth again in 2015; her first regular transit was back in 1948.   A classic ocean liner dating from the 'golden age' of transatlantic passenger ships has passed through the Pentland Firth, almost 70 years since she made the first of her many regular transits of the tide-swept, narrow channel between Caithness and Orkney.

The Highland Council will launch their Cold Call Control Zone Community Toolkit tomorrow in a bid to help communities protect themselves from doorstep crime.  The resource has been created by Highland Council Trading Standards.

Two vessels made their debut visits to Gills Harbour on the morning of Sunday, May 10th, 2015.   The mini-ships Uskmoor and Lodesman sailed across the Pentland Firth from Orkney to conduct operations in the Inner Sound of the narrow, tide-swept, channel separating Caithness from the isles.

Partrac Ltd.will be recovering three bottom mounted ADCP frames from the following positions (in WGS84) from the Inner Sound of the Pentland Firth: ADCP 01 58° 39.6033 N 003° 08.4651 W ADCP 02 58° 39.5697 N 003° 08.2482 W ADCP 03 58° 39.4890 N 003° 08.2627 W All equipment (including ground weights) will be removed from site at the end of the study.   Recovery operations are planned for 10th to 12th May 2015, weather permitting.

Nairn by-election result
The by-election for a councillor to serve the Nairn Ward (No 19) on The Highland Council has been won by Stephen Kenneth Fuller - Scottish National Party (SNP).   Stephen Fuller was one of six candidates, who contested the vacancy, created by former Councillor Colin Macaulay stepping down in March.

Your vote matters tomorrow
Voters in the three Highland constituencies for the UK Parliamentary General Election of: Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross; Ross, Skye and Lochaber; and Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey are being reminded by Returning Officer Steve Barron that their vote matters.   Tomorrow (Thursday 7 May) voting begins with 283 polling stations opening their doors at 7am and remaining open for voters until 10pm.

The Returning Officer for the Highland constituencies in the UK Parliamentary general election is reminding voters to check the name of the local polling station.   The name of the polling station is printed on their polling card before they leave home to vote on Thursday 7 May.
