My name is Struan Mackie and I am the Scottish Conservative and Unionist candidate for the Thurso and Northwest ward in this May's Local Government elections. I work as a business consultant for one of the ‘big four' accountancy firms in the UK and work across the country to support business.

I have decided to seek re - election in Thurso and North West Caithness as an Independent candidate as I feel that I do not want to be shackled by the dictate of a political party. Local communities need their voices heard and as an Independent I can do this.

Centralisation in Caithness is damaging for us and our futures. Examples include the illogical new Ward boundaries, loss of emergency control rooms, planning decisions overturned in Edinburgh and the desperate situation with our hospitals/ambulances.

Roger's record I have been proud to represent Thurso as one of your local councillors since 1999, but in May, our ward boundaries are changing. The new ward of Thurso and Northwest Caithness stretches from Reay to Dunnet, Castletown, Bower and Scarfskerry; it includes Scrabster and Halkirk as well as Thurso.
More than 50 small firms in the Highlands and Islands involved in the life science and technology sector were given the opportunity to compete for a share of £400,000 of Scottish Government funding at an event yesterday (5 April). Share The local firms have all signalled their interest in a competition run by the Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) by attending a briefing at the HIE's An Lòchran building on the Inverness Campus in Inverness on Tuesday 4th April 2017.

A robot has demolished parts of a site connected with the first reactor to achieve criticality in Scotland almost 60 years ago. The final internal structure has been taken apart at the Dounreay Materials Test Reactor (DMTR) support building complex which now allows the building to be demolished.

The latest list of Bank of Scotland branch closures is once again put down to changing banking habits by customers who are doing more transactions online. The latest wave of Lloyds closures will affect 54 Lloyds bank branches, 22 Halifax branches and 24 Bank of Scotland branches.

Ambulance bosses are admitting that inter-hospital transfers from Caithness General are estimated to double this year from the number recorded four to five years ago. Highlands and Islands Labour MSP Rhoda Grant has now received an answer to a question sent on 8th December last year asking the Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS) for details of transfers.

Interest-free loans now available to help reduce fuel bills. The Scottish Government's Home Energy Efficiency Programme Scotland (HEEPS) has announced £30 million of funding to help householders make their homes more energy efficient.

Four design consultancies or Joint Ventures are to be invited to bid for the contract for a 26 mile stretch of the A96 from east of Huntly to Aberdeen - the eastern section of the Scottish Government's ambitious programme to dual the A96 from Inverness to Aberdeen by 2030. The contract, worth up to £50 million, is expected to be awarded later this year.

The output of the Scottish economy contracted by 0.2% during the fourth quarter of 2016, according to statistics announced today by Scotland's Chief Statistician. Change in gross domestic product (GDP) is the main indicator of economic growth in Scotland.

As many as 4,800 people with health conditions and disabilities will receive help to get into work without the threat of sanctions in the first year of new Scottish employment services. Employment support is one of the first powers to be devolved through the Scotland Act 2016.

Farmers and crofters who are waiting for their 2016 payment under the Less Favoured Area Support Scheme (LFASS) will be offered a Scottish Government funded loan. Rural Economy Secretary Fergus Ewing confirmed this will provide around £50 million support to businesses operating in Scotland's most marginalised and remote areas.

Funding to support women-led businesses has been doubled to £120,000 First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced today in California. The funding for Investing Women, a Scottish social enterprise which supports women-led businesses, was confirmed during a meeting with American angel investors in the First Minister's first day of engagements in the United States.
In response to a call for evidence on the impact of city-region deals in Scotland, by a Scottish Parliament Committee, Highland Council Director of Development and Infrastructure, Stuart Black said:"It is very early days to assess the impact of the City-Region Deal, however, it is anticipated that the impact of the Deal on Inverness and the wider Highland region will be significant in securing the long term productivity and economic growth of the region and position it as a region of digital opportunity. Regional partners estimate that the City-Region Deal funding of £315m could unlock up to an additional £800 million of investment by the private sector.
With Scottish Council elections taking place in just a few weeks, voters in the Highlands are being urged to make sure they are registered to vote and are able to take part on polling day, Thursday 4 May. The call for voters to sign up comes as the Electoral Commission launches a national voter registration campaign to encourage as many people as possible to register ahead of the elections taking place this year.
