North MSP hails jobs boost for the far North
On a week when some local businesses announced they were closing, including well known shoe shop DE Shoes, and the last maker of refrigerators in the UK- Icetech Freezers of Castletown, a company that provides services for the Norwegian oil and gas industry is to open its first supply base in Scotland.   NorSea Group, which operates nine sites in Norway, has signed an agreement with Scrabster Harbour Authority to set up a base in Caithness.

A camera has delved into the depths of Dounreay’s famous dome and captured the first footage for over fifty years of Britain’s first Fast Breeder Reactor.   Nitrogen cooled digital cameras have been inserted into the reactor and recorded the images of the internal structures and the breeder fuel matrix.

Recruitment process agreed for Chief Executive’s post
The Highland Council has agreed the process for recruiting a new Chief Executive, following the announcement by Alistair Dodds, Chief Executive, that he will retire on 31 August.   The post, which carries a salary of £140,112, will be advertised on Friday 3 May with a closing date for applications on Friday 17 May.

Householders warned of rogue traders offering tarmacking services
Trading Standards officers of The Highland Council Standards are warning householders to be on their guard if approached at their home and offered tarmacking.   This follows reports being received that rogue traders are operating in the Dornoch area and are informing householders that they are in the area working for The Highland Council and have some tarmac left over.

Council disappointment at Icetech liquidation and loss of jobs
The Highland Council has expressed its deep regret at the liquidation of Castletown-based company, Icetech Freezers Ltd, with the loss of more than 70 jobs.   Councillor Deirdre Mackay, Leader of the Council’s Caithness and Sutherland Area Committee, said: “This is a huge blow for the Caithness economy.

£2.6m Boost For Fishing
The latest round of European Fisheries Fund (EFF) grants will give support to 78 projects across the sea fisheries, aquaculture and fish processing sectors.   Successful applications range from seafood companies - who will benefit from equipment and funding to access new markets � to vessel modernisation and safety equipment.  
Caithness company wins second Queen's Award for Enterprise
Small, medium and large companies from across the UK are today celebrating winning a Queen’s Award for Enterprise - the UK’s highest accolade for business success.   The success of 152 businesses has been recognised this year: 116 exporting companies have won ‘Awards for International Trade’; 27 for ‘Innovation’, and nine for ‘Sustainable Development’ benefitting the environment, society and the economy.

Disabled people set to lose £28.3bn of support
- Thousands of disabled people will be hit simultaneously by up to six different welfare cuts - Disabled people will lose £28.3bn of support by 2018 - Up to 3.7 million disabled people affected in total - Demos calls on the Government to publish the cumulative impact of multiple cuts to benefits - Scope asks where disabled people fit in to Chancellor’s ‘aspiration nation’? Hundreds of thousands of disabled people will be hit simultaneously by up to six different welfare cuts, according to new research published today by Demos.   The shock figures, the result of analysis commissioned by disability charity Scope, reveal for the first time the cumulative impact of the Government’s welfare reform plans with an astonishing £28.3bn being taken out of disabled people’s pockets by 2018.

Appointment of new sheriff for Grampian, Highland and Islands
On 20 March 2013 Her Majesty the Queen appointed Mr Andrew Miller, Solicitor Advocate as a floating sheriff for Grampian, Highland and Islands based at Dingwall.   First Minister Alex Salmond nominated Mr Andrew Miller for appointment on the basis of a report by the independent Judicial Appointments Board.

Retailers urged to shop local
Retailers have been challenged to make a permanent commitment to Scottish food producers.   Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead called today for retailers to make a commitment to increase Scottish sourcing – backed up with long-term contracts - as well as offering producers a fair price to ensure everyone in the food chain reaps the rewards.
