Thurso Glassblower, Ian Pearson recently stepped down as Chairman of the British Society of Scientific Glassblowers after holding the post for the last seven years.  He was the longest serving Chairman of the BSSG since its formation in 1960 and in recognition of this Ian was presented with Honorary membership of the Society.

Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd - Sale 26 September 2009
DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd, (September 26th) sold 384 rams and females at its annual show and sale of Cheviot and Continental rams and females.  The overall show champion and winner of the Mountrich trophy was a Texel ram lamb from Ravensview, Strathpeffer, which realised £480 to Conon Brae Farms, Torgorm, Conon Bridge.

Technological First For Carbon Footprinting In Highlands and Islands
Highlands and Islands businesses are piloting an American web project widening access to carbon footprint analysis to small operators.   Measuring carbon footprint for goods and services has primarily only been affordable to major companies, but the new free website offers small businesses the chance to calculate the impact their activities are having on the environment.

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (September, 25th) sold 5,598 breeding and store sheep including 1,531 sheep on behalf of Lewis Livestock Producers.   Breeding ewes (3,339) averaged £45.92 and sold to £96 gross for Cheviots from the dispersal of the Davoch flock from Rogart.

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (September, 22nd) sold 56 prime cattle.  Prime bullocks (18) averaged 170.7p (+2.6p) and sold to 179p per kg and £1,169.60 gross.

Babcock International To Buy UKAEA For £50m
The UK government has agreed a deal for UKAEA Ltd, its up-for-sale commercial nuclear clean-up business, with Babcock International for £50million according to various sources this week.   The government and UKAEA have said the sale was to allow UKAEA to compete for nuclear decommissioning work around the world.

A new community woodland is to take shape near Wick thanks to Forestry Commission Scotland.   The Commission has stepped in to buy Newton Hill Croft in a bid to ensure that the local community continue to enjoy a woodland resource.

Convener Confirms Council Commitment to Caithness
Work has begun this week on a feasibility study into the major upgrade of Wick High School.   Architects, LDN, from Forres, have been commissioned by The Highland Council to examine three options, which include (a) a new build; (b) refurbishment and partial demolition, new build and (c) refurbishment.

Public opinion sought on revised management rules for Highland burial grounds
People in the Highlands are being asked to have their say on proposed new management rules for burial grounds under the control of The Highland Council.   The Council approved the current management rules for burial grounds in 1999.

LOTTERY GIVES PULTENEYTOWN A MILLION REASONS TO CELEBRATE
Plans to build a much anticipated new community and regeneration centre in Pulteneytown, Wick have moved a step forward this week following a cash injection of £1 million from the Big Lottery Fund.   The Pulteneytown People's Project is one of five projects in Glasgow, Fife, the Highlands and West Lothian today sharing in £2,369,891 from BIG's Growing Community Assets programme.
