Tourism Top Of The Agenda
Tourism will be top of the agenda next week when The Highland Council's Planning Environment and Development Committee welcome VisitScotland's Chief Executive Philip Riddle. As well as outlining the recent changes to VisitScotland's structure that follow on from last autumn's government review, Mr Riddle will brief Councillors on VisitScotland's new market segmentation approach to marketing.22/5/2008
Highland Council seeks to increase support for speakers of other languages
The Highland Council is to strengthen its commitment to welcome migrants and their families settling into Highland communities by increasing English language tuition to assist their integration. Members of the Council's Education, Culture and Sport Committee on 22nd May 2008 agreed that the Council would apply for future European funding.20/5/2008

MAJOR AQUACULTURE EVENT HELD IN AVIEMORE
One of the UK's largest aquaculture events will be opened by Environment Minister Michael Russell in Aviemore on 21st May 2008 This new event is expected to attract up to 1,500 people who will get the chance to discuss the future development of the industry. An exhibition will host more than 60 stands from local companies through to international players from countries such as Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Iceland and Canada.18/5/2008
Wick Training Centre Introduces New Business Support Coordinator
Colin Stewart joined the Wick Training Centre at the start of April as Business Support Coordinator. He will be responsible for meeting the training requirements of businesses in Caithness, which will entail meeting with local businesses, finding out about their training needs and letting them know what Wick Training Centre can offer.18/5/2008
SEPA seeks views on radioactive waste disposal guidance
The principles and requirements for near-surface disposal facilities dealing with radioactive waste have been set down in a new guidance document being consulted on by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA). As Scotland's environmental regulator, SEPA is responsible for ensuring that people and the environment are protected both now and in the future.18/5/2008
LOCHHEAD TAKES FISHING FUEL CONCERNS TO BRUSSELS
- Meetings with UK government and Europe requested - Fisheries Secretary Richard Lochhead today (Monday) headed to Brussels demanding urgent talks with the UK Government over what can be done to help the Scottish fishing industry over increasing fuel prices. He said that the Scottish fleet is being particularly hard hit with the industry facing the prospect of having to pay an increase of tens of millions of pounds in fuel costs over the last year.18/5/2008
The Caithness Energy Alliance Returns To The All Energy Exhibition 2008
All Energy 2008 is on the 21st and 22nd May at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre. The Caithness Energy Alliance, formed last year to promote a range of skills to compete for work in the onshore and marine renewable energy market, aims to market the advantages of the Caithness area, its renewable energy resources, industrial track record and the skills available.16/5/2008
Counter-fraud Exercise Is Reaping Rewards
Almost £10 million worth of fraud and errors have been identified following a national detection exercise by Audit Scotland working together with other public bodies. The 2006/07 National Fraud Initiative (NFI) formed part of the audits of 74 participating bodies, including councils, police forces, fire and rescue services, health boards, the Scottish Public Pension Agency and the Student Award Agency for Scotland.15/5/2008
The Crown Estate in Scotland - "Highland Cross Party Group Seeks Review"
For the first time in The Highland Council's history, the four political groupings on the Council have signed an agreement to work jointly and co-operatively to achieve a review of the Crown Estate in Scotland so that the resources involved, including Scotland's seabed and much of its foreshore, produce greater benefits for local communities. Drew Hendry, SNP, Chair of Planning, Environment and Development and Councillors Richard Durham, Independent, Michael Foxley, Liberal Democrat, and Jimmy Gray, Labour, have signed the agreement on behalf of the Council's cross party working group, which aims to achieve changes to current policy and operations of the Crown Estate in the Highlands and more widely.Fairways of Wick - An Opportunity To Buy A Well Known Business

Caithness Recycling Service Expands
People in Caithness are benefiting from further expansion of The Highland Council's kerbside recycling collection service for paper, cans and garden waste. Mr William Nicolson from Battery Road in Castletown is one of 500 households benefiting from the roll out of the scheme, bringing the total number of households in Caithness to 8,000 and around 70,000 in total throughout Highland.14/5/2008

The First Of The New Highland Council's PPP2 Secondary Schools Are Handed Over
The tiled floors have been laid, the classroom furniture is in place and the finishing touches applied to The Highland Council's new replacement secondary schools in Dingwall and Portree. After two year's of construction work, Morrison Construction, part of Galliford Try group, has handed the keys over to the new Dingwall Academy and Portree High School following an independent inspection and both are now ready for the Council to fully prepare to welcome pupils and the community.10/5/2008
Culbokie 3 Bin Recycling Update - Can Highland Double Its Recycling?
Since February, 125 volunteer households in Culbokie, Ross-shire have been taking part in The Highland Council's 6 month innovative recycling trial. Households taking part have been provided with 3 new wheeled bins in which to separate their waste.30/4/2008
