803 new cases of COVID-19 reported.   19,469 new tests for COVID-19 that reported results - 4.8% of these were positive.

As at 7th February, 8,726 deaths have been registered in Scotland where the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was mentioned on the death certificate, according to statistics published by National Records of Scotland (NRS) today.   In the week 1-7 February, 374 deaths were registered that mentioned COVID-19 on the death certificate, this is a decrease of 70 deaths from the previous week.

Discretionary Business Grant Scheme open for applications
The Highland Council has today (Wednesday 10 February) launched its Discretionary Business Grant Scheme.  A one off £2000 business grant is available for businesses who have been unable to secure alternative grant support and have seen a significant reduction in trade - be that goods or services.

Legal Aid Resilience Fund
A coronavirus (COVID-19) resilience fund for legal aid firms and law centres, worth up to £9 million, has opened for applications.   The Coronavirus Resilience and Recovery Fund for Legal Aid has been created to provide financial support to enable legal aid services to the public to continue - assisting those practitioners that have had a reduction in legal aid business levels because of the restrictions in place.

Three-in-ten New Universal Credit Claimants Have Seen Their Debts Grow During The Crisis
Over three-in-ten people who have started claiming Universal Credit (UC) during the pandemic have either acquired new debts, or seen their existing debts grow, as the crisis enters its eleventh month, according to new Resolution Foundation research published last Sunday.   The debts that divide us - which includes analysis of a detailed online YouGov survey, supported by the Health Foundation – explores how people who have newly claimed UC during the pandemic have coped financially, as well as their prospects for the coming months.

Firm Insolvencies Have Fallen And Cash Reserves Risen During The Crisis - But Targeted Support Still Needed
Unprecedented Government support has helped firms to increase their cash holdings during the current crisis, but further support will be needed in the Budget to ensure they can drive Britain's recovery, according to new Resolution Foundation research published today (Wednesday 10 February 2021).   On firm ground? - the first of four Recovery Plan papers to be published by the Foundation over the next two weeks – examines the position of firms during the Covid-19 crisis, and their prospects for powering the recovery.

Highland Council Welcomes Land Use Partnership Pilots In Region
The Highland Council's Chair of Economy and Infrastructure Committee and Chair of Climate Change Working Group, Cllr Trish Robertson has welcomed the Scottish Government’s recent announcement that the Highland Council area will be 1 of 5 areas being piloted as Regional Land Use Partnerships to help develop an approach to land use in support of Scotland’s green recovery and transition to net-zero.   A Scottish Government announcement said that they "...will work with the pilot groups to test approaches to partnership governance that best suit the local situation and priorities.

First Minister Questioned On Support For Marine Tourism Businesses
Highlands and Islands Labour MSP, Rhoda Grant, today (10.02.2021) appealed to the First Minister to put help in place for marine tourism businesses who have received no financial assistance to mitigate the effects of the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions.   During First Minister's Questions, Mrs Grant said "The First Minister is aware that businesses have received lifeline assistance based on their rateable value.

Highland Council is expecting delivery of 617 tablets and laptops this week through the Connecting Scotland scheme.   This is excellent news which will ensure our most vulnerable children, young people and families are not digitally excluded.

Highland families start to see benefits of financial inclusion initiative
Families have started to benefit from a 2019 financial inclusion initiative run by Highland Council's Health Visiting Service and Welfare Team.   In 2019, the team was invited to join other organisations from across Scotland to be involved in a national financial inclusion improvement project to address the high level of unclaimed benefits by families with young children.

Temporary road closure - B874 Bridge Street, Halkirk
Motorists are being advised by The Highland Council that there will be a temporary road closure on the B874 Bridge Street, Halkirk on Wednesday 10 February 2021 between the hours of 9:00 until 17:00.   The closure is required to create a safe working area for iron work repairs.  
15 Further Call Handling Jobs For Police Centre In Inverness
Cllr Matthew Reiss, Highland Council's Strategic Lead for Police and Fire has welcomed Police Scotland's announcement that it has created fifteen new posts to further enhance the development of call handling services, based in Inverness.   He said: "We were delighted in October last year to welcome 25 new jobs in Inverness with the creation of a specialist call handling service team and these fifteen additional new posts based in the Highlands are great news.
