NHS Highland today announces the appointment of Dr Boyd Peters as its new Medical Director. Dr Peters, who has the held post on an interim basis since April 2019 this year, was previously the board's Associate Medical Director for mental health and worked as a GP in Grantown-on-Spey for over 25 years.
Highland Council today (15 August 2019) launched a consultation on a potential Highland Transient Visitor Levy. The Council has not yet made a decision on whether to implement a Transient Visitor Levy (TVL), also known as a Tourist Tax.

Agriculture students are looking for mentors to help them complete a new module launched by Scotland's Rural College (SRUC). The Enterprise Appraisal and Development module will give third year degree students hands-on experience of running a farm over a period of six weeks.

Train fares are set to rise again on the 2nd January 2020 by around 2.8 per cent, according to the Retail Price Index for July announced today. This new fare rise announcement comes shortly after a 3.1% increase in January.
The Highland Council is warning the public of the presence of an algal bloom at Loch Watten, Caithness, following an examination of sample water on Monday (12/08/19). As a precautionary measure, environmental health have posted notices next to the water body, warning that contact with the algal scum or material should be avoided.
IoT Scotland has welcomed its first customer after The Highland Council selected the open access network to provide IoT connectivity for an innovative and transformational water monitoring contract. The Highland Council awarded a three-year contract to Dundee-based IoT Scotland partner M2M Cloud to roll out their Neptune water-monitoring sensor technology to over one hundred buildings across their estate.

An officer in the Highland Council's Trading Standards team has won a UK award for her work on anti-counterfeiting and protecting consumers. Lynn Foster was presented with the Dave Hankinson Memorial Award for Individual Excellence by Phil Lewis, Director General of the Anti-Counterfeiting Group (ACG).

Thanks to a complaint from one of the trade stalls at the recent Black Isle Show and the quick response from the Black Isle Farmers Society, Highland Council Trading Standards were able to seize just over 100 counterfeit hoodies, polo shirts and t-shirts from a stall at the show. Enforcement Officers from Trading Standards acted on the complaint and found the trader selling many different fake items using popular brands such as Fortnite, Armani, Adidas, Nike, Superdry, Polo and Boss.

The Highland Council has appointed Geo-Rope Ltd to carry out rock scaling and netting works at the A890 Stromeferry Bypass. Road closures and traffic management will be in place from the 9th of September to the 3rd of November.

CHARITY FLOODED WITH CALLS AS PENSIONER COUPLES BEAT "TOY BOY TAX" DEADLINE. Age Scotland's Helpline has been inundated with hundreds of calls as older people put in last-minute benefit claims before a change in the rules next week.
The Highland Council, in partnership with Adaptation Scotland, have launched a survey asking local communities and businesses to share their experiences about how they have been affected by severe weather and climate change over the past few years. While the impacts of climate change and extreme weather are already being felt across the Highlands, from damage to infrastructure, to disruption of vital services and a shift in growing seasons, more information is needed about how local communities and businesses are being affected.

Highland S4 pupils have recorded excellent levels of National 5 awards with 45% pupils in S5 achieving 5 National 5s - an increase of 6% since 2015 and an increase of 2.5 % compared to last year. Highlands and Islands Enterprise has sold the to the University of the Highlands and Islands in a deal worth £9.83m. Funded by a loan from Scottish Funding Council, the sale will consolidate and help further develop the university's School of Health, Social Care and Life Sciences.
