Changes to a number of Polling Districts and Polling Places in the Highlands were agreed yesterday (Thursday 5 September 2019) at the meeting of The Highland Council. Members approved a new Scheme of Polling Districts and Polling Places that will be in place for the next four years.

Age Scotland is calling for urgent reassurances over contingency plans in the face of uncertainty over health, social care and immigration. The charity warns that shortages of medication and qualified health and care staff could have a serious impact on Scotland's oldest and most vulnerable people.

Gimmers (543) averaged £99.89 (+£1.67 on the year) and sold to £148 gross for a pen of Cheviot Mules from Newmore, Muir of Ord.

Twenty-six projects have received a share of £900,000 through the Highland & Moray Fisheries Local Action Group (FLAG) to boost the local economy and create jobs within the fishing, aquaculture and maritime industries, backing a total investment of over £2 million pounds. The funding has been awarded through the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund & Scottish Government to encourage community-led local development and enable localised decision making though Fisheries Local Action Groups (FLAGs).

Plans to create a spaceport that will launch communications satellites into orbit from the Moine peninsula in Sutherland are set to be unveiled for discussion at public meetings over the next two months. Development agency Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), which is backing the £17.3m project to design and build Space Hub Sutherland, has today (Wednesday 4 September) lodged a proposal of application notice with the Highland Council.

The Scottish Government's failure to "get a grip" on delayed discharges is seriously harming older people's health, Age Scotland warned today. The charity is calling for urgent investment in health and care services, as the latest figures show an "eye-watering" total of almost 1,500 patients stuck in hospital unnecessarily each day in July.
Seven Dounreay apprentices have received their indenture certificates at a special event to mark the successful conclusion of their 4-year training programme. The latest group ‘graduating' joined the company in 2015 - the 60th year apprentices had been part of the workforce at Dounreay and the first time in more than a decade that design office apprentices had been recruited.

The board of NHS Highland came together last week for a dedicated workshop to look in depth at the issues arising from the bullying and inappropriate behaviour reported in the Sturrock Review published earlier this year. The holding of a workshop was one of the key recommendations made in the Sturrock Review.

NHS Highland plans to rent a temporary pop up shop to update local residents about proposals for its primary health and social care hub for Wick at the end of this month. During the Caithness Health and Social Care consultation last year, the board found the temporary ‘High Street Presence' approach proved an effective way to engage with people about the redesign plans.

MSP David Stewart is urging NHS Highland to find a speedy solution for a system of compensating and supporting staff who have been bullied and harassed after questioning its senior officials in parliament today. Mr Stewart, at Holyrood's health and sport committee, raised the issue of psychological support and compensation for those who have previously suffered, many of whom have privately shared their stories with the MSP and at that special meeting in Eden Court, Inverness, last year.
Pentland Housing Association has decided to transfer to Cairn Housing Association following a strategic review. Tenants, staff and board members were all involved in the review which was set up to plan for the future of the Association and how it provides homes and services to tenants and other customers.
Pentland Ferries has announced that the company's new ship, Alfred, left the yard in Vietnam, yesterday morning, Thursday, to start the long voyage home to Orkney. Director of Pentland Ferries, Kathryn Scollie, said: "We are delighted that the MV Alfred is now on her way.
Police officers in the Highlands and Islands will start using mobile devices as part of their operational duties which will increase their visibility within local communities. Officers will be able to access a wide range of police systems while out on duty without the requirement to return to a police station and log on to a computer.
Kings Golf Club Inverness, (formerly known as Torvean Golf Club), has officially opened a new course and clubhouse on the north side of the A82 trunk road, on the outskirts of Inverness, marking the completion of a £12.35M investment as part of the Inverness West Link Road project. The official opening ceremony took place today, Friday 30th August 2019, with special guest Bernard Gallagher, former three times Ryder Cup Captain and the Provost of Inverness Helen Carmichael.

At Tuesday's Health and Sport Committee meeting at the Scottish Parliament (Tuesday 3rd September) the committee will be scrutinising NHS Highland. The committee is likely to question them on: their response to the Sturrock report and further press reports of bullying issues; NHS Highland receiving brokerage for the second year in a row; NHS Highland's concerns over the potential impact of Brexit on the workforce.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) has launched a consultation into plans to replace a subsea cable in the Pentland Firth. According to the company, routine inspections have identified that the Pentland Firth East cable is coming to the end of its operational life and needs replacing.
