On 22nd January 2019 the Moray West wind Farm planning application returns to the North Planning committee but merely for some slight changes to the location of some turbines to lessen the impact on certain views. The original permission and this one is not within the power of the committee but they have the ability to enter an objection.
Scrabster harbour has set out a tendering process for major new works at the harbour. The procurement notice sets out what is required from tendering companies for the multi-million pound contract.

Corallian Energy has not found oil at its Wick exploration well located in License P2235 off the UK. Corallian started drilling the 11/24b-4 well using the Ensco-72 jack-up drilling rig in late December.

Zero tolerance for people caught driving with illegal drugs in their system. Scotland's stringent road safety laws will be strengthened further by the introduction of drug driving limits and roadside testing on 21 October this year.

Rural Economy Secretary Fergus Ewing has written to Secretary of State Michael Gove, impressing on the UK Government the need to deal sensibly and sensitively with the setting of applied tariffs for imports to the UK, particularly in relation to agri-food products. In the absence of a trade agreement between the UK and European Union, the same tariffs would apply to imports to the UK from the EU as from third countries.

Views are being sought on the detail of a new benefit that aims to help young people with the costs associated with the transition into the workplace. The proposed Job Grant consists of a one-off cash payment of £250, or £400 for a young person with children, which will be available to those between 16-24 who were out of paid work for six months prior to finding employment.

On 14 January 2019 the Commission announced the commencement of its reviews of electoral arrangements for the six council areas specified in the Islands (Scotland) Act 2018. These are Argyll and Bute Council, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Highland Council, North Ayrshire Council, Orkney Islands Council and Shetland Islands Council.

Patients at two more Highland hospitals will be able to attend out-patient appointments closer to home thanks to the set-up of special staffed clinics using the latest video-consulting technology. The NHS Near Me service at the Portree Hospital on Skye opened on Wednesday 19th December 2018 and another clinic based at the Lawson Memorial Hospital in Golspie, Sutherland, went live this week (Wednesday 9th January 2019).

Transport Scotland has today announced that R J MacLeod Ltd has been awarded the construction contract as part of the £9.6 million project to deliver improvements to the road alignment and the existing tight hairpin bend on the A9. Michael Matheson, Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Infrastructure and Connectivity said:"This is a particularly challenging stretch of the A9 to navigate and this investment will improve road safety as well as minimise the need for vehicles to slow down or stop to negotiate the bend.
Police in Lochaber can confirm that a 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with alleged consumer protection offences in Fort William. It follows an investigation by Police Scotland and Highland Council Trading Standards, after a report was received this week of "bogus workmen" in Fort William and alleged fraudulent activity relating to charges for work carried out on a house in the town.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks Transmission (SSEN Transmission), the wholly-owned subsidiary of SSE plc, has completed the construction, commissioning and energisation of the new Caithness-Moray electricity transmission link. Caithness-Moray is the largest single investment ever undertaken by the SSE Group and represents the most significant investment in the north of Scotland electricity transmission system since the 1950s.
Energy & Business Services: It was good to meet this week with a large company seeking to grow its presence in Caithness, and good to be able to provide some productive links with initiatives that HIE is already supporting and which might help further attract its interest. We are fortunate in having a number of opportunities in the north in the engineering/ energy sectors and I'm particularly keen to help where there are clear opportunities to use innovation as a means of bringing more international trade opportunities to the area.

A commitment to maintaining Less Favoured Area Support Scheme (LFASS) funding at least at 80% in 2020 has been reiterated by Rural Economy Secretary Fergus Ewing. Following changes to EU law, industry bodies and key influencers were consulted on whether to move away from LFASS towards an Area of Natural Constraint scheme and the response was not to do so.
