Scotland’s population hits an all-time high
Statistics published today by the National Records of Scotland (NRS) have shown Scotland’s population reached a record total in 2012.   The figures, based on 2011 Census data, show that the estimated population of Scotland was 5,313,600 in mid-2012, a rise of 18,200 people since Census Day on 27 March 2011.

RWE NRL Publishes Caithness Community Profile
RWE NRL has published online the results of the Caithness converstaion research run several weeks ago in the county.   Foundation Scotland carried out the research for RWE NRL to find out the views of communities, businesses and key local stakeholders as to how they thought community benefit could be used to the best advantage for the area as whole and local communities.

NHS Highland Faces Up To £10million Overspend
NHS Highland faces a forecast overspend of £9.8 million though a report by the organisation's Director of Finance predicts financial break-even by the end of the financial year.   In a report to NHS Highland's board, which will meet on 13th August, Nick Kenton points out that his forecast of break-even depends on the delivery of savings targets and a range of management actions.

Rise in retail sales
Sign of ‘increasing consumer confidence’ Scottish retail sales figures have increased for the second time this year, official figures published today show.   The amount of goods purchased in shops increased by 2.4 per cent when compared to the same quarter last year, and 0.5 per cent when compared to the previous quarter.

Police in Wick are investigating two incidents of housebreaking.  One of the incidents occurred at a premises on the High Street and one in the Whitehouse Park area.

Ancestral tourism has potential to create £2.4 billion for Scotland’s tourism businesses
Scottish tourism businesses are being encouraged to adapt their products and services to tap into ancestral tourism opportunities in the run up to 2014, when Scotland welcomes the world for Homecoming, the Ryder Cup and Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.   Companies are being urged to take advantage of this market through a new Ancestral Tourism in Scotland guide published by Tourism Intelligence Scotland (TIS), as part of its Opportunities for Growth series, aimed at helping businesses to take advantage of new and emerging opportunities in the sector.
