Timespan to host Area Committee with tourism top of the agenda
The Caithness and Sutherland Area Committee will take place at Timespan in Helmsdale next Monday and top of the agenda, is a Highland Council key Programme priority for the economy, tourism. Area Leader Councillor Deirdre Mackay said: “Tourism is one of the main sectors of employment in the Highlands and it is with this in mind that I felt it would be meaningful to hold the committee in Timespan.14/2/2013

This report was produced by Citizens Advice Bureaux in Highland Introduction In 2011/12 Highland bureaux advised clients on 24166 new benefit issues, on-going clients returning for further advice were further advised on 21303 repeat benefit issues. SSE searches for the next generation of power workers
To support a new ‘golden era’ of investment in the electricity infrastructure of the north of Scotland, leading energy company SSE is on the look out for bright sparks from across the region to become its next generation of power workers. Part of an annual scheme, SSE is searching for 36 talented individuals for its 2013 Modern Apprenticeship programme with places located at over 15 of its sites across the north of Scotland including Inverness, Muir of Ord, Foyers in the Great Glen, Golspie, Fort William, Dingwall, Aberdeen and Peterhead.

Committee Raises Fears for Ship Building Jobs If Independence Goes Ahead
COMMITTEE URGES SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT TO RESPOND TO ITS REPORT: “SEPARATION SHUTS SHIPYARDS” The Chair of the Scottish Affairs Committee has today written to Nicola Sturgeon MSP, Deputy First Minister for Scotland, to ask the Scottish Government to formally respond to the Committee’s recent report, “Separation Shuts Shipyards”. In the report, published 20 January 2013, the Committee warned that the Scottish shipbuilding industry and its employees face a choice between two very different futures at the referendum on Separation.10/2/2013
Proposed renewal of the Business Improvement District for Inverness
Ballot papers for the Inverness Business Improvement District (BID) renewal election arrived on the doorsteps of 676 voters in 447 premises on Friday 8th February 2013. The election is being conducted by The Highland Council and voters have until 5pm on Thursday 21 March to return their ballot papers.9/2/2013

Council Tax freeze for sixth year in a row
At a special meeting on Thursday 7th February 2013 The Highland Council has agreed to freeze the Council Tax for a sixth successive year and confirmed a budget of £548.436 million for 2013-14. The Council Tax bands will remain: Band A: £775.33; Band B: £904.56; Band C: £1,033.78; Band D: £1,163.00; Band E: £1,421.44; Band F: £1,679.89; Band G: £1,938.33; Band H: £2,326.00.8/2/2013

Tourism, Food & Drink: The Institute of Design Innovation has been working with a small group of tourism businesses in Caithness & North Sutherland on a HIE-funded programme to stimulate innovation in creating high quality visitor experiences. New station arrives on time for Conon Bridge
The Highland Council has warmly welcomed the opening on Friday 8th February 2013 of Conon Bridge railway station and the return of rail services to the community more than five decades after the original station closed. The £600,000 refurbishment has been delivered on-time and to budget.8/2/2013
Harbour Storm Damage - Emergency Funding
Fishing harbours affected by the recent storm damage are benefiting from an additional £1 million for emergency works. The storms, which were caused by an unusual combination of south easterly gales, low pressures and high tides, were described as the worst in decades and caused damage across Scotland.8/2/2013
B9006 Construction of Culloden Road widening and new access to the UHI campus
As part of the construction works currently taking place on the east side of the A9 at Beechwood, there is now new traffic management in place on the B9006. The right turn to the southbound slip road access to the A9 from the B9006 Culloden Road has been diverted and is restricted to residential access only.8/2/2013
Scotland set for tobacco bans
The ban on open display of tobacco products in large shops and sales from self-service tobacco vending machines will be introduced on 29 April. Two orders laid in Parliament today by Minister for Public Health Michael Matheson set the date for the display and vending machine bans to come into force in Scotland.6/2/2013
MSP Rhoda Grant Highlights Concerns About Highland Unemployment Figures
Highlands and Islands MSP Rhoda Grant is highlighting figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) “model-based “ unemployment estimates for local authorities which show an unemployment rate for the Highland council area of 4.7 per cent compared with the 2.8 per cent rate from the ONS’s monthly claimant count for Job Seekers Allowance. A9 Kessock Bridge – Introduction of permanent route changes 
The commissioning process of the new traffic management arrangements to reduce delays as the result of the resurfacing of the Kessock Bridge from 11 February is now underway. The introduction of the traffic signals will be phased to reduce the immediate impact of the change on road users.
