Radio-active Particles In The Marine Environment
An independent report on the views of people in Caithness and north Sutherland about radioactive particles in the marine environment has been published. The report summarises the feedback from more than 400 people who took part in a series of information-gathering events ahead of formal consultation later this year on the options for dealing with the particles.12/7/2006

A9 Is Putting Brake On Development Say Firms
OVER 60 per cent of businesses surveyed in the Highlands and Central Belt want the A9 road to be fully dualled between Inverness and Perth, according to a report commissioned by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE). The survey was carried out as part of a broad ranging research programme by HIE to determine the future transport investment priorities for the region - identifying the options that will best support long-term economic development.[Health]

UKAEA Submits Planning Application For New Waste Disposal Facility
A planning application for the construction of facilities for disposing of solid low level radioactive waste from decommissioning Dounreay has been submitted to the Highland Council. UKAEA is seeking permission to construct a series of shallow engineered vaults adjacent to the existing nuclear licensed site, a grouting plant within the existing site and an administration block.Caithness Partnership eBulletin July 2006

Small businesses in Caithness and Sutherland are being encouraged to consider the benefits of becoming part of the largest organisation in the UK promoting and protecting the interests of the self-employed and owners of small firms. Norwegian And Russian Visitors At Dounreay
On Wednesday 21st June visitors from Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority & Russian Federal Medical Biological Agency enjoyed a visit to the Dounreay Site to learn more about UK experience in the management of radioactively contaminated facilities and related decommissioning waste management issues. During their visit, they were given a guided tour of site, PFR, DFR, the Shaft and WRACS.29/6/2006
ABSL Helps NASA Return to the Moon
ABSL has been selected by NASA to provide batteries to power its Lunar Reconnaissance (LRO) spacecraft. This spacecraft will be launched in 2008 and will survey the moon looking for new landing sites that can be used to set-up bases on the moon that will be used for further exploration of the solar system.28/6/2006
Employers Urged To Train Older Workers
Food and drink manufacturers in Scotland are to be given advice and practical examples to promote the benefits of investing more in training their older workers. Improve, the food and drink sector skills council, has commissioned research to find out what practices leading employers already have in place to develop the skills of older workers, and will gather case studies that can be shared with other employers throughout the sector.25/6/2006

This is the message delivered today by Norman Harrison, director of UKAEA Dounreay, in a new publication setting out the benefits of accelerated clean-up of the site and the efforts being made to find alternative employment for staff whose jobs presently depend on this work.21/6/2006

ABSL & QinetiQ Win MOD Portable Power Systems Development Programme
The MOD has just awarded ABSL Power Solutions Ltd (ABSL) and QinetiQ Ltd (QinetiQ) a contract to mature technology for the next generation of portable power systems. The contract, worth up to £5 million was awarded for up to three years, follows an open competition under the UK MOD's Technology in the Supplier Base (Output 6) research programme and will be managed within the Dismounted Close Combat Integrated Project Team (DCC IPT).18/6/2006

As a follow on from the affordable housing project O'Brien Construction Ltd designed at Manson's Lane, they are hoping to develop the Old Brewery Building into a further six social housing units. The Old Brewery is a category B listed building, built around 1798 in traditional Caithness flagstone rubble, which has been derelict and disused for many years.13/6/2006
