The first Highlands and Islands Food and Drink Awards will be held in October 2005, and organisers are on the look-out for potential winners from any Highlands and Islands businesses linked to the food and drink sector. The awards will be given to businesses achieving excellence within the industry and will highlight those which are demonstrating innovative, forward thinking and collaborative work.

In March, CASE sent the web-based business survey to a valid sample of around 500 businesses, and achieved 114 responses, a rate of 23%. This survey covers employers� perspectives on recruitment, training and business confidence.

The Harbour Lights at Smith Terrace, Wick is now under new ownership and has made some improvements to the lounge which is availbel for hire for parties and other celebrations or meetings. Consideration is being given to building an outdoor covered area to accomadte smokers when the new rules come into force on smoking in public places.

The second phase of the European-funded 'HIE Activity' scheme is well under way across the Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) network area. 'HIE Activity 2', which was approved by the Highlands and Islands Partnership Programme on the 1st of February this year (2005), runs until the end of June 2006.

The Highlands and Islands Enterprise network (HIE), today (Friday June 17), launched its new strategy 'A Smart Successful Highlands and Islands'. The document, which spells out HIE's objectives over the coming three to five years, is published in both English and Gaelic and is available online at Highlands And Islands Enterprise Network Strategy,or from any HIE network office.
The economy of the Highlands and Islands is continuing to improve, with unemployment showing a steady downward trend while population levels are rising. That was the message today (Thursday 26 May) from William Roe, chairman of Highlands and Islands Enterprise.
NOTE: This statement from Caithness and Sutherland Enterprise has been issued following KPMG's announcement that Caithness white goods manufacturer Norfrost has gone into administration. A copy of the KPMG release follows, for reference.

Kristin Douglas has set up Wax Nostalgic Ltd, based at her home in Halkirk, through which she will produce a range of handmade, environmentally-friendly, products for use around the home, available from her website at http://www.waxnostalgic.co.uk The range will include furniture polish, leather and wood care products, antibacterial and antifungal and general cleaning sprays, all made with a very high content of natural materials such as bees wax, organic and non-organic essential oils, pure vegetable oils and resins.

RWE NUKEM has had a double success in safety and environmental performance. For the eighth consecutive year, the Company has achieved one of the UK's most respected safety awards from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) � the Gold Medal for best practice in health and safety.

Caithness and Sutherland Enterprise (CASE) has announced the introduction of Business Learning Accounts (BLAs), targeting small businesses in the area. Businesses across other parts of the Highlands have already used BLAs to broaden their product range, to establish a market for new crops, for specialised survey training and to diversify and establish sector "best practice".
