SEPA urges everyone to have a safe and happy Bonfire Night
2nd November 2008
Now that the evenings are getting darker, and colder, many people are starting to think about Autumnal celebrations like Hallowe'en and Bonfire Night. While huddling round a blazing bonfire is an important part of the celebrations, and a good way to keep warm, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) is reminding everyone that careful consideration needs to be given to what goes on any pyres.
Chris Matthews, one of SEPA's team leaders said: "Bonfires should not be used as a way to dispose of unsuitable wastes, whether household, industrial or commercial. Many items of waste can release fumes into the air, which are not only damaging to the environment, but can also affect the crowd around the fire."
Some items are especially dangerous, such as;
· aerosol cans;
· paints tins;
· empty containers that may have contained flammable chemicals;
· old tyres, rubber;
· furniture (older items may contain polyurethane foam);
· carpets and synthetic floor coverings;
· builders' waste.
Fires should be built as close as possible to the evening, as they can become a dumping ground for people wishing to dispose of unsuitable rubbish illegally.
Anyone who would like more advice on what is suitable for a bonfire can contact their local SEPA office. Details of telephone numbers are available at www.sepa.org.uk, or you telephone 0800 80 70 60.
