More financial support is being provided to employers to take on apprentices who have been made redundant as a result of the pandemic.

Payments for employers recruiting apprentices who have lost their jobs is being increased from £2,000 to £5,000 through the Scottish Government's Adopt an Apprentice programme..

The increased payment will help more apprentices find a new employer and complete their apprenticeship.

Scottish Government has put the future workforce at the heart of rebuilding and renewing the economy.

Minister for Business, Fair Work and Skills Jamie Hepburn said: "Apprenticeships are not only valuable for those undertaking them, they are a key way for all employers to invest in their workforce, and provide the skills the economy needs both now and in the future, especially as we focus on restarting and growing Scotland's economy from coronavirus (COVID-19).

"Our national mission is to create new jobs, good jobs and green jobs, and apprenticeships have a key role to play in that. To support this, our £60 million Young Person's Guarantee will ensure everyone aged between 16 and 24 has the opportunity of work, education or training."

Minister for Business, Fair Work and Skills, Jamie Hepburn said,"We also announced that £10 million will be dedicated to supporting Scotland's Apprenticeships - this increased financial support for employers taking on an apprentice who has been made redundant due to the pandemic, is part of that and will help more apprentices complete their training and continue on their career journey."

Skills Development Scotland Chair, Frank Mitchell said,"Increased financial support for businesses will help more apprentices affected by the pandemic find new employers and complete their training."

"We will continue to work with the Scottish Apprenticeship Advisory Board, other industry organisations and the Scottish Government on employer incentives and support for individuals."

The incentive is available to businesses who employ Modern or Graduate Apprentices who have lost their job to continue their training and complete their apprenticeships.

The enhanced incentive is part of a range of measures to help recruit and retain apprentices in employment.

Apprentices who are close to completing their training will also be offered support to ensure they can achieve their qualifications, gain credit for learning and get support to find other opportunities.

While young school-leavers facing reduced opportunities as a result of the pandemic will be able to take part in training through Pathway Apprenticeships set to be available in winter.

Skills Development Scotland is also supporting the Scottish Government's Young Person Guarantee.

The guarantee ensures education, training, an apprenticeship, employment, volunteering or supported activity for young people aged 16 to 24-years-old.

What is Adopt an Apprentice?

The financial incentive helps you cover the wage and recruitment costs of taking on an apprentice who has been made redundant from another employer. It should be used to support an apprentice with employment for a minimum of 12 months.

The financial incentive for all sectors is £5000 for taking on a Modern or Graduate Apprentice.
