Council reduces speeds at three more Highland Schools

From Tuesday 5 May, 2009, three more schools in the Highlands will have part time 20 mph speed limits in operation for children's' safety.

The new limits are being introduced at Tongue Primary, Sutherland and at Bualnaluib Primary, Aultbea and Inverasdale Primary in Ross. At Tongue the 30 mph speed limit in the village is extended and a new 40 limit is introduced.

The part time 20 mph limits will operate Mondays to Fridays during school term times at:

Tongue Primary from 8:40am to 9am; 2:30pm to 2:45pm and 3:15pm to 3:30pm;

Aultbea (Bualnaluib Primary) from 8:40am to 9am; 2:30pm to 2:45pm and 3pm to 3:15pm; and

Inverasdale Primary from 9:15am to 9:30am and 3:30pm to 3:45pm.

When Tongue becomes operational 62 schools in Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross will have 20 mph speed limits in place. When Bualnaluib and Inverasdale become operational 80 of the 82 schools in Ross, Skye and Lochaber will have new speed limits in place. Strathgarve and Poolewe remain to be completed.

Motorists are reminded that if they speed in the vicinity of Highland schools then the penalties will be tough. The Highland Council, Northern Constabulary and the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (Highlands and Islands Area) are clear that if motorists are caught speeding near Highland schools where a 20mph limit is in place, then robust enforcement action will be taken by both the Police and the Procurator Fiscal Service.
