Councils Can Choose To Freeze Council Tax Again
29th January 2021
In order to protect people's incomes, local authorities are to be given £90 million of funding - the equivalent of a 3% increase - on top of the local government settlement to compensate councils who choose to freeze their council tax.
Some have already said this amounts to an election bribe.
Ten years of council tax freezes have squeezed council budgets and hit services.
The Council Tax freeze in place between 2008-09 and 2016-17 ended and the 2017-18 Local Government Finance settlement included an agreement between the Scottish Government and local government for locally determined Council Tax increases to be capped at 3 per cent.
