Almost all of the factual detail behind the design of Simec Atlantis Energy 's AR series of tidal turbines was developed through R& D works done by technicians and devices in the Pentland Firth's Inner Sound from work-boats (mainly 'multicats') temporarily based at Gills Bay harbour which is just one mile away from its MeyGen sub-sea site.
The first AR turbine (1.5 MW) is there, whilst plans are actively being made for the deployment of at least two upgraded turbines.
A £5 million upscaling project with a notional 2 MW capacity at the MeyGen site is underway.
The machine now installed at Naru island, near Nagasaki, Japan, was fabricated/assembled at Global Energy's Nigg site on the Cromrty Firth.
