from March 3, 2021, PHS have adopted an improved method for linking daily confirmed COVID-19 cases with deaths reported through the National Records of Scotland. As a result of this methodologic improvement, an additional 172 confirmed COVID-19 deaths were identified as having occurred within 28 days of a first positive COVID test result since the start of the outbreak. These have now been incorporated into the cumulative total. The Heads of Statistics for Scottish Government and Public Health Scotland decided the timing of release for this additional data based on the need to assure quality of the numbers for publication.

in the week ending 28 February, 227 deaths were registered where COVID-19 was on the death certificate.

Since the start of the outbreak:

7,421 people have died who have tested positive as at 6 March (including the additional 172 deaths identified by PHS on 3 March, and an additional 3 recently registered deaths that were identified by PHS on 4 March)

9,580 deaths have been registered in Scotland where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate up to 28 February
