Pubished in 2015 this leaflet still shows the huge variety of scenes in the north.

Wide open expanses characterise this northern region of the Highlands. Enjoy its peace and tranquility by following one of the suggested itineraries in this leaflet. Each of the coastlines of this wonderful wilderness offers something different.

Head north-west to Sutherland for rugged, dramatic beauty. A stunning walk from the lighthouse at Stoer Head takes you to a 200ft sea stack and, on a clear day, offers fantastic views of the Outer Hebrides. Or visit Handa Island, a place internationally renowned for its seabird colonies.

Follow the changing landscape of the north coast towards Caithness's fertile farmlands. Stop off at the most northerly point on the British mainland, then visit the must-see Stacks of Duncansby. Imposing pyramidal stacks, they erupt from the sea in some of the most impressive formations in Britain.

And, for quiet serenity, make for the east coast, with its charming woodlands, fishing villages and ancient brochs. The Iron Age Carn Liath is an impressive structure surviving to the first floor. And you don't want to miss the Falls of Shin, where you can see salmon leaping as they migrate upstream.
