Mutual Aid Provided By Highland Council On Salt Supplies

7th January 2010

A number of councils in Scotland are experiencing shortages of salt and, through Mutual Aid arrangements, the Council is in a position to assist those councils with the most pressing needs.

The Council is expecting a fresh supply of salt from our suppliers in Northern Ireland. A consignment of 3,400 tonnes is expected to arrive at Invergordon Harbour tomorrow (Friday). A further 2,000 tonnes is expected at Inverness on Sunday.

A supply of 150 tonnes from tomorrow's consignment is earmarked for the Western Isles Islands Council, and 100 tonnes will be made available to both the City of Edinburgh and Renfrew Councils.

Neil Gillies, Director of Transport Environmental and Community Services, said: "We have a sufficient supplies of salt in Highland, enough to keep us going for the next week. We are happy to be able to help those councils in Scotland with the most pressing needs. This will not impact on the service we provide in the Highlands."
