* There continues to be large volumes of tests being processed by labs; this has impacted turnaround times resulting in delays between specimen's beings taken and results being received and reported. PHS are continuing to monitor the situation.

On 5 January 2022, the Scottish Government announced that people who do not have symptoms will no longer be asked to take a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test to confirm a positive Lateral Flow Device (LFD) result. Instead, anyone with a positive LFD, who does not have symptoms, should report the result online as soon as the test is done. In order to ensure that we continue to provide the most accurate information, changes have been made to the national COVID-19 case definition to reflect this revised testing strategy. At present, we report on PCR tests only. From Thursday 13 January, we will begin reporting on the number of people with a COVID-19 infection confirmed by either a first LFD or PCR positive test.

on 11 January, 16 new reported death(s) of people who have tested positive.

in the week ending 2 January, 44 deaths were registered where COVID-19 was on the death certificate (noting that death.

registrations for this period are affected by public holidays and are likely to be artificially low).

Since the start of the outbreak:

9,950 people have died who have tested positive as at 11 January.

12,470 deaths have been registered in Scotland where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate up to 2 January.

29% of COVID-19 registered deaths related to deaths in care homes, 64% were in hospitals and 7% were at home or non-institutional settings (as at 2 January).

1,479 people were in hospital yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19; of these, 54 were in intensive care.

in addition, yesterday 11 confirmed COVID-19 patients were in intensive care longer than 28 days.

in the week ending 6 January, 985 patients with confirmed COVID-19 were admitted to hospital.
