Who's Funding Our Politics?

26th November 2022

For years, sections of the media have worked to expose the organisations housed at 55 Tufton Street, and their over - reaching influence over the Government.

These opaque lobby groups and right-wing think tanks, such as climate-sceptic Global Warming Policy Foundation, the Liz Truss linked Institute for Economic Affairs and ‘anti-woke' groups like Restore Trust , carry out their lobbying with undisclosed donors, misinformation, astroturfed websites (i.e. pretending to be grassroots) and some even enjoy tax relief after setting themselves up as charities.

Now Good Law Project is embarking on a series of legal interventions focused on Tufton Street cronyism and dark money in politics.

We want to degrade the whole ugly Tufton Street infrastructure - bring it into the light and force it to comply with the law.

Restore Trust recently tried and failed to seize control of the National Trust in a bid to stop it exploring debates on issues like slavery and LGBTQ+ inclusivity. They have received our first formal step in legal proceedings as they failed to provide an explanation of who is behind their website and who processes their supporters' data.

And last month we worked with MPs to question the Global Warming Policy Foundation (GWPF), whose work to water down measures to address climate change is, remarkably, being subsidised with public money due to their charity status. We highlighted breaches in charity law regarding their operations and management of funds. The Charity Commission has responded to our letter asking them to investigate GWPF and they say they are actively considering the information we have shared with them. We will take legal action if the Charity Commission fails to discharge its obligations.

These two interventions are just the start. Unmasking these organisations and challenging their abuse of charity status are just two of the litigation tools we are using to tackle dark money in our politics.

This is complicated and important work requiring specialist legal help, and we need your help as well. Please donate

Comment
What is perhaps objectionable is when political think tank representatives appear on various tv and radio programmes or are quoted as experts in the media with little explanation that they are promoting a political view but may sound to the general public as if they are neutral. To get an idea of any particular group look at who funds them and get even more suspicious of that is hidden or kept secret.
Let's hope the Good Law project exposes not just those in Tufton Street but many others around the country.
