Exam results in Scottish Schools 2009-10

Scotland's Chief Statistician today published statistics relating to the pre-appeal attainment of pupils in Scottish schools at national and education authority levels.

The statistics relate to further analysis of the August 2010 SQA pre-appeal exam results and present cumulative attainment in 4th, 5th and 6th year for pupils in publicly funded secondary schools.

The main findings are:

There has been a gradual increase in attainment by the end of 4th, 5th and 6th year. Attainment is greater for females than males in all stages and in all categories
Ninety-two per cent of pupils gained awards in both English and Maths at SCQF level 3 (e.g. Standard Grade Foundation) or better by the end of S4. Thirty-five per cent attained five or more awards at SCQF level 5 (e.g. Standard Grade Credit) or better by the end of S4
The largest increase can be seen in S5 attainment, with the percentage of the S4 roll (from the previous year) achieving one or more Highers or better increasing from thirty-nine per cent in 2007/08 to forty-three per cent in 2009-10

Over the last three years, the percentage of the S4 roll (from two years previous) attaining five or more Highers or better by the end of S6 increased to twenty-two per cent, a rise of two per cent. In the same period the percentage attaining one or more Advanced Highers reached fourteen per cent, a rise of one per cent
